iPad Pro 12.9” not responding to touch intermittently

I bought an 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 around 6 months ago and since day one I’ve had trouble with the screen not responding to touch intermittently. It will randomly stop responding to my touch for anywhere between 1 and 30 seconds before coming back, it’s most noticeable when typing as letters or whole words will be missed which is infuriating. The home button still responds and usually gets things working again. I’ve also found that having bluetooth off stops it happening quite so often but it still happens (it’s happened a few times just typing this message out). The Apple Pencil always seems to work, it’s just finger touches that stop doing anything.

I kept hoping an update would fix the issue but nothing has changed yet. I love the iPad but this issue is unacceptable for such an expensive piece of equipment and is driving me nuts now. I’ve tried doing an erase and restore twice with no effect. I also keep the screen as clean as I can.

Im concerned about sending this in to Apple to be looked at because it’s an intermittent issue that they may not be able to replicate in the no doubt short testing they do. Has anyone else with this issue had any luck with apple support fixing it?

I highly recommend going to an Apple store rather than sending any faulty device in the mail to Apple because the technicians working at the Apple stores have tremendous discretion in replacing the failed device on the spot. In the case at hand, the technician reset all settings on the iPad at the store and told me to take it home and try it out and if that did not work to do a total erase of settings and contents on my own. Neither of the foregoing resets remedied the problem. So, I took it back and explained that there was no resolution to the problem and they agreed to swap the device for a new one. To answer your question, the stuttering/ non-responsive touch screen was never replicated in the presence of the technician. Frankly, it’s totally random and it could take many hours for it to occur.

Ok so tried everything nothing worked. But read one solution somewhere and tried it and voila it worked at least for me.

So, go to settings then display and brightness and turn off the Lock/unlock option. After 15 mins no issues at all and today is the 3rd day.

I cannot gurantee if this will work for you, but if yes do reply so that apple cannot push out an update for it.

Not sure if this is the answer, but i’ve been having this issue for many months. Not certain if it coincided with the change when I went to iOS 12 beta. But I read comments which seemed to link to the Apple Pencil so I went to Bluetooth settings and removed the Apple Pencil and it’s been behaving since. I had the issue even with no Apple Pencil around

I’ll have to see if it works long term but it could be that the palm rejection is kicking in automatically. I had the Apple Pencil and an older Apple wireless keyboard in my Bluetooth settings so maybe there’s a conflict there too. Wonder if someone else can confirm the same result. If so maybe removing and readding the pencil will work. I’m leaving it off for now.

I received my 2018 IPAD Pro 12.9 back from Apple repair on Monday 04/01. They were not able to replicate the touch issue so no repair was done. I reloaded and have been using it now for 4+ days and have not had one failure. So what changed? When I sent it in I was at IOS 12.1.4 and when I got it back it was at 12.2. Not sure what they did in 12.2 but it appears to have fixed the problem. Your post said "The iOS 12.2 update is supposed to fix the touch issues across all iPad Pro models." Did you find a statement from Apple that acknowledges a touch issue in previous IOS releases?

As I keep pointing, this is NOT a hardware, but an iOS 12 software problem, that seems to be still a problem for some, even after iOS 12.2, which was supossed to fix this issue, based on users using the beta versions of iOS 12.

I have a feeling a new iPad Pro is going to exhibit the exact same issue if this is an iOS 12 problem.

This issue is across three years of iPad Pro models here.

This IS an iOS 12 issue as my iPad Pro is not having any touch issues running iOS 10.3.3.

This bug/issue really made itself more aware with the release of iOS 12 back in Oct. 2018.

It appers some iPad Pros are doing much better on iOS 12.2, while other iPad Pro users here are still having this issue.

i have a feeling iOS 12 updates are going to dwindle down sooner than later, this time around.

Hopefully this issue will get solved for everyone by the end of the OS 12 update cycle.

Maybe lucky iOS 13 will be better.

No way to know.

Maybe a few of you should check that your iPad isn’t slightly bent, it happened to me again on my iPad 10.5” but thats because I fell sleep and partially slept on it, and the aluminium frame was bent slightly which affected the screen input. The metal frame tends to hold shape once bent, not like plastic where it kind of springs back into shape. I’d imagine it’s a lot easier to bend the 12.9 inch iPad . I also had a similar issue before which was resolved by plugging in my Apple Pencil here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250154346

I bought the IPad Pro 11inch 1TB capacity model in November 2018 and started experiencing problems in January 2019. Apple initially refused to replace my iPad and told me to try using my iPad as new for a week to see if the problems would still occur. They also told me I had to show video proof of the problem which was a hassle as the problems only arose intermittently. After successfully recording proof of the problem even with my iPad setup as new, they replaced my iPad.

New iPad was fine initially, now in May, I’ve had to request for a new iPad again as the problem started happening once more. This is even after I’ve updated to the latest IOS 12.2. The employee at the Apple Store told me he had never heard of this problem before and that I was the first person to complain about it. He clearly didn’t realise that it was the second time I was complaining about this issue in the same Apple Store. I also showed him the PCmag article which also highlighted the issue and that I wasn’t the only one experiencing it.

If this third iPad also experiences similar problems, I will most likely request for a refund as the iPad is just unusable and frustrating to use as the problems occur so frequently. Hopefully, Apple recognises the problem and fixes it before that day comes.

There is only a growing minority of iPad Pro users, across all year and models reporting the unresponsive touch issues with iOS 12 and, possibly, iOS 11.

There are between 500-1000 users that have reported the issue here in these communities.

There are 5-6 postings that are building up pages in these postings, like this one and I see and respond to, at least, one posting of this unresponsive touch issue a day.

This issue is affecting only a very small percentage of the total amount of all iPad Pro users, perhaps only up to 1%, or so, currently.

In 3 years of iPad Pros, there are a very, VERY large majority of iPad Pro users NOT having this particular issue.

If the number of users having this unresponsive touch issue keep increasing, then Apple will probably move more quickly on this issue.

Hi all,

For those of you who are still experiencing it - can you please try something?

iPad 3rd Gen: When your iPad has been idle for hours, hold it and feel the warmth of the Pencil. A few of us have noted warm Pencils now. DO NOT disconnect the Pencil from the side and try using the iPad. Check if it still stutters.

iPad 2nd Gen, plug the pencil in, leave it for a while. Pick up the iPad again, leaving the pencil in, try and use it and see if it stutters.

A few of us have been able to deduce that our issues are to do with Pencil connectivity.

I have an iPad 12.9 (2015) and never had this issue until probably one of the latest iOS 11 or since iOS 12. Now it has become just unbearable, as the device is often rendered useless by a clearly iOS-only-related issue: out of convenience I in fact use the Assistive Touch - which floats a semi-transparent square above whatever app is running, and even when any parts of the screen stops responding within an app (from Apple or 3rd-parties), this ‘floating’ element is not only fully touch-responsive and functioning, but it can still be dragged across the whole screen, with a perfect response to the position and movement of the finger that drags it. So, clearly, it is not a hardware issue (i.e., “it’s not my iPad” to have an issue), or it would affect also this software-created item just like any other element appearing on the screen. It’s instead an iOS-related issue (i.e., “it’s your software to generate the issue, Apple!”), which still allows this iOS-feature to function but leaves any other app temporarily ‘disconnected’ from receiving any input from the screen.

I have just updated to iOS 12.2, and the problem is still there, with no improvement whatsoever.

I’m an early-days iPad user and it’s so frustrating that Apple just doesn’t give a **** about fixing something like this! Why should anyone upgrade to any new iPads, if they report exactly the same type of problems?!
