iPad Pro 12.9” not responding to touch intermittently

I bought an 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 around 6 months ago and since day one I’ve had trouble with the screen not responding to touch intermittently. It will randomly stop responding to my touch for anywhere between 1 and 30 seconds before coming back, it’s most noticeable when typing as letters or whole words will be missed which is infuriating. The home button still responds and usually gets things working again. I’ve also found that having bluetooth off stops it happening quite so often but it still happens (it’s happened a few times just typing this message out). The Apple Pencil always seems to work, it’s just finger touches that stop doing anything.

I kept hoping an update would fix the issue but nothing has changed yet. I love the iPad but this issue is unacceptable for such an expensive piece of equipment and is driving me nuts now. I’ve tried doing an erase and restore twice with no effect. I also keep the screen as clean as I can.

Im concerned about sending this in to Apple to be looked at because it’s an intermittent issue that they may not be able to replicate in the no doubt short testing they do. Has anyone else with this issue had any luck with apple support fixing it?

My new 11” ipad pro does this: when I use it in portrait mode, with the USB-C port at the bottom, using the on-screen keyboard, certain letters are skipped when typing. Especially those closer to the midddle of the screen (y, g etc.). It’s horrible really.

Gets worse if my hands are hugging the left and righ sides of the ipad. It’s totally fine if I flip the ipad and use it with the USB-C port pointing up, or in landscape mode. And it doesnt happen when i put the ipad down on a surface and type without holding it, so I’m thinking it’s somethin to do with the smart keyboard connectors, or something electrical/conductive anyway.

Anybody else noticing this? Relly easy for me to replicate if I just type a series of letters “y” and “o” rapidly, like oyooooyoyoyoyoyoyoooooooooyoyoyoo (You can see how many “y”s are missed). Again, this doesn’t happen if I flip the ipad, or put it down, or type in landscape.

Drives me crazy really.

It happened to me also, I have been following this forum for 1 month and I had tried every solution suggested by members and unfortunately still can solved the freezing screen.

I tried to turn off “find my iPad”, it seems helped for 12 hours but the problem start again after that and when I tried to repeat the process, unfortunately doesn’t help anymore

I think Apple should seriously look into this matter and help us with a solution. I myself have been using Apple’s products for more than 12 years and always happy and satisfied with them but not this IPad Pro 10.5 which I’m really disappointed

I had this problem. I reset twice (clean) and still had the problem. I updated to the 12.1.2 beta and it still didn’t fix. Then I went through reviews of the apps I had installed and stumbled across the Blackberry Work reviews which suggest (and I suspected) that it is causing performance issues on newer (3rd gen) iPad pros (like my 12.9”). I have uninstalled and... It’s fixed. Doesn’t really help me as I needed that for work but does get the rest of my iPad flying along.

Similar problem, Happened with my first iPad pro 12.9, apple sent a replacement and after a year or so my new one is doing it. As with the first one it started and progressively got worse. All the things that are suggested to fix ie. restarting, cleaning screen, set to factory defaults, etc. at first seem to work but now the problem is so often that the iPad is frustratingly useless. I have had iPad's since the very first one came out never had this kind of problem. My first iPad still works, although not supported. This is a problem that apple needs to fix.

my 2017 Series 2 was doing it towards the 15 month mark. I bought the new 2018 iPad Pro on Nov 7th and it’s doing it from now. This is unacceptable for a machine that’s $2000. I am furious. Apple did a hardware test with me over Twitter yesterday and found it wasn’t a hardware issue. I reinstalled software on my other device and it stopped happening for a little while but started up again. If this keeps happening I am going to demand a refund.

So I worked something out. Do yourself a favour and download one of those battery apps that cleans out memory. I downloaded one that's just a big iPhone version. When I jumped in it said I had 4% ram available. I cleared it and the iPad was working like it was brand new with not a single stutter anymore. I think there are some problematic apps that use ram even when they're closed. I'm doing a process of elimination but it's vastly improved since I downloaded this new app.

Same problem here on a iPad Pro 10” model. I can confirm the intermittent but frequent unresponsive touch gets better when turning off Bluetooth. I do use the pencil a lot so this is not a good solution and typing is a real pain. I’m running iOS 12.1 ... the problem did not get fixed with a software update.

It seems as if it is worse towards the center of the screen but I could be wrong.

OK. Another breakthrough:

I was wondering why it’s not more of a widespread or reported issue and checked with an editor for 9to5Mac. Most people I’ve asked have Wifi only models. I have Wifi & LTE. I toggle Bluetooth on and off and still got it. I also did the same with Wifi and it was still happening.

I turned off Mobile and it instantly stopped happening. Like I am literally scrolling buttery smooth without a single frame rate drop or hiccup once it’s been turned off. I turned it back on and saw that the issues started again.

***EDIT*** Issue has come back. Mine is happening mostly on Safari when loading a website like an article on smh.com.au. Because it’s happening so much, I’m confident I can replicate the issue in front of an Apple Genius.

Does everyone on here have an LTE model? Either way, Apple needs to know about this. Not good enough when the machine is 1.5 months old and costs more than a MacBook Air.

I have been experiencing same issue. Can be very frustrating especially when playing games. I found a way to work around the issue. When experiencing the non response to touch on iPad Pro screen, take your Apple Pencil off the frame normally for charging. With your Apple Pencil still NOT attached to the iPad, restart your iPad. So long as you don’t sync your Apple Pencil, Finger touch works without issues on iPad. Hope Apple can correct problem with the Apple Pencil on 2018 iPad Pro 12.9“. Very frustrating.
