iPad Pro 12.9” not responding to touch intermittently

I bought an 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 around 6 months ago and since day one I’ve had trouble with the screen not responding to touch intermittently. It will randomly stop responding to my touch for anywhere between 1 and 30 seconds before coming back, it’s most noticeable when typing as letters or whole words will be missed which is infuriating. The home button still responds and usually gets things working again. I’ve also found that having bluetooth off stops it happening quite so often but it still happens (it’s happened a few times just typing this message out). The Apple Pencil always seems to work, it’s just finger touches that stop doing anything.

I kept hoping an update would fix the issue but nothing has changed yet. I love the iPad but this issue is unacceptable for such an expensive piece of equipment and is driving me nuts now. I’ve tried doing an erase and restore twice with no effect. I also keep the screen as clean as I can.

Im concerned about sending this in to Apple to be looked at because it’s an intermittent issue that they may not be able to replicate in the no doubt short testing they do. Has anyone else with this issue had any luck with apple support fixing it?

My iPad Pro 12.9 was spastically unresponsive to touches on the screen when I typed on the keyboard. Some times I would continually tap on one or two keys and nothing! I took off my case and no issues. I got to thinking and realized that I had the case folded up so the magnetic cover that turns the iPad on when I opened and closed it was on the back of the iPad. I decided to try turning that function off and it worked! No issues!!I turned off Lock/Unlock feature under settings/display brightness for the iPad cover and now no issues. Don’t get rid if your case or cover, just turn that feature off. Hope that helps 😉

Thanks MichelFM

Unfortunately the link you've provided results in an Error - Page Not Found page.

Interestingly, having activated the AssistiveTouch and just had a screen freeze trying to open an app, the AT small square menu button remains responsive, but nothing else. If this were a hardware problem with the screen, then I'd imagine the AT menu/button wouldn't work either.

IMHO it does appear to be software related.

No one who works directly from Apple's headquarters ever reads or participates in these, largely, Apple user to user support communities.

You are just posting your comments to other Apple product users, here.

There have been reports, once again, that the iOS 12.4 betas have, supposedly, fixed this touch screen issue.

But, the same things were stated about the 12.2 and 12.3 beta versions fixing this issue, too, and it seemed to not solve this issue when the final official 12.2 and 3 updates were released by Apple.

I do not know if there is something going on when the final iOS 12 updates are released by Apple VS the beta versions that continues to cause these touch screen issues to re-appear in just the larger screen iPad Pro models.

Since this does not affect every iPad Pro, there is no pattern to discern what is causing this and why it is not happening to more iPad Pro users than the barely less than 1000 user reports here in these iPad support communities.

This but/issue seems to be a truly isolated one only affecting a small subset of the three years of iPad Pro 12.9, 10.5 and 11 inch screen models.

There are NO reports of this affecting any 2016, 9.7 inch screen iPad Pro models and, currently, no reports of this non-respinsive touch screen issue affecting the brand new 2019, 10.5 inch screen iPad Air 3 models, as yet, either.

I can now definitely confirm that my 10.5” iPad Pro is now again usable after the factory reset and data restore using iTunes.

Previously it was completely unusable, displaying the symptoms being described within this thread. It will be interesting to see if it continues to behave or whether it reverts again in the future.

My experience has to be software not hardware related.

I’ve got an iPad Pro 12.9 3rd gen and I had all the symptoms of unresponsive screen as well ( it was so severe that it basically was unusable ). I updated to Ios12.4 beta 2 and I can confirm as well that the unresponsive screen has been fixed, unless it’s plugged to the power supply ( it still freezes sometimes ).

Has anyone tried iPadOS 13?

I called Apple to report that I had exactly the same problem and unresponsive screen. I’ve sent them a bunch of reports and I’ve been extremely patient with all the situation for the last three weeks, but now I just feel that they are stalling me because they confirmed that it’s not a hardware problem. This only means one thing We’ve got to wait and see if the next update fixes the problem.

Danz91, the fix you provided for my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9” has worked like a charm! I notice big difference now playing games, iMessaging, Emailing and using Productivity Apps. I find not having the “Touch to Open” turned-off worth having an iPad Pro 12.9” that finally works as I’d expect. I hope a fix can be found for those with other models continuing having touch issues. It’s been challenging all this time. I recommend Danz91’s fix. Again thanks.

I sorta, kinda knew that this touch issue would return on your iPad.

It seems when others tried a complete factory reset 1 or 2 months later, the unresponsive touch issues returned.

Post some more feedback to Apple and maybe consider contacting them in CA. and having a chat about this growing issue and your iPad Pro touch issues.

Just out of curiosity,

I do not remember, do you use any screen protectors?

Are you using an Apple Pencil and how often do you use it?

Do you disconnect it from Bluetooth when NOT using the Pencil for a period of time?

How much internal free data storage space is left in that iPad Pro?

Do you leave a lot of potential background running apps in the iOS app switcher?

Do you leave a lot of active Website tabs open in the Web browser?

Basically, how do you use your iPad everyday?

If we can figure out if everyone is doing some of the same exact things with their iPad Pros, maybe all of us can figure out what is going on with all the screen touch issues.

This is getting frustrating as Apple does not seem to be fixing/addressing this is or is even aware that this issue exists, at all, after all of this time and after, hopefully, all the user feedback posted on this non-responsive touch screen issue!

I too have an iPad Pro that’s suffered this issue. Mine is the 2017 10.5 inch. It happened on all versions of iOS 12 but then at least a hard reset would seem to clear it up for a good length of time (even multiple months at a time) I decided to do the ios 13 beta on it thinking the surly the issue would be resolved in ios 13. Both public beta 1 and 2 the problem is even WORSE. The iPad becomes just about completely useless. I did just try turning on the assistive touch and it seemed to be better for a short period (45 min) at least with scrolling. But when I went to type this the problem came back so I had to use my Bluetooth keyboard. Since I’m on the beta at least I can keep reporting the issue through the beta feedback app. Apple DOES check all of those. So my hope is by sending them all this feedback through the beta program maybe they will finally take a look or at least attempt to fix it.

Not so foolish.

My mom has both severe arthritis and a degenerative nerve disorder that effects her entire body, including very dry and wrinkly skin, as well as, decreased electrical activity in her body and especially in her fingers and fingertips.

She can't even use normal, commonplace capacitive stylii the actually are designed to boost electrical activity from your fingers to the stylus.

She has to use battery powered, “active” capacitive stylii that send a small electrical pulse to the tip of the stylus to simulate an actual finger touch to the screen.

This is an actual thing and some users with excessively dry hands have reduced touch/electrical sensitivy and use of moisturizers on the hands that get onto the iPad/iPhone screen can have negative impact on the touch screen, as well.

This is a VERY REAL thing!

if you had one of these you’d clearly understand the screen doesn’t work properly. It’s so apparent it’s ridiculous, meanwhile, iPhones and wife’s iPad work great 100%. This isn’t a user issue. It’s a hardware problem. I know people say software, but apple has had so many software updates and can’t fix it. It must be a physical (and expensive repair) problem to fix or we’d all be saying the problem is fixed. I’m out $1200 dollars and can’t resell this thing! Thanks apple!
