iPad Pro 12.9” not responding to touch intermittently

I bought an 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 around 6 months ago and since day one I’ve had trouble with the screen not responding to touch intermittently. It will randomly stop responding to my touch for anywhere between 1 and 30 seconds before coming back, it’s most noticeable when typing as letters or whole words will be missed which is infuriating. The home button still responds and usually gets things working again. I’ve also found that having bluetooth off stops it happening quite so often but it still happens (it’s happened a few times just typing this message out). The Apple Pencil always seems to work, it’s just finger touches that stop doing anything.

I kept hoping an update would fix the issue but nothing has changed yet. I love the iPad but this issue is unacceptable for such an expensive piece of equipment and is driving me nuts now. I’ve tried doing an erase and restore twice with no effect. I also keep the screen as clean as I can.

Im concerned about sending this in to Apple to be looked at because it’s an intermittent issue that they may not be able to replicate in the no doubt short testing they do. Has anyone else with this issue had any luck with apple support fixing it?

I have a 2017 iPad Pro 12.9, top spec. It did the touch screen malfunction. Same symptoms. Apple graciously replaced it after initially saying I would have to pay about half of retail to fix it. The replacement started doing it and later stopped recognizing my Verizon SIM card. I did all of Verizon’s suggestions and then they sent me a new card....which was unrecognized. The funny thing is that the SIM card is recognized at the very beginning of the hello/setup process after wiping and then stops recognizing the card. So it isn’t hardware.

i bought a 2018 iPad Pro. Top spec 12.9 cellular 1 TB. IT started with this touchscreen BS. A few days ago, I updated to 12.2. All the sudden......no problem. Cross my fingers, the screen has been great. Apple, if you actually fixed the error - thank you......truly thank you.

If this is who I think this is, sorry, part of your reply here IS off-topic and not within the post discussion here.

Trying to “sneak” other, unrelated information into a non-related topic discussion isn't allowed bere, either.

And Apple doesn't really allow any type of generalised discussion here.

These technical support communities are not a social media site for any general discussions of Apple’s procedures and policies.

And while part of your reply is not a rant, per se, it is a critique/critism of Apple's Terms of Use and product support policies here.

So, it has to reported and but will be reported as an edited post and your post will be edited, unfortunately.

Nice try.

You can't really post your points and iOS knowledge in an unrelated post, like this.

I am pretty sure I know who are.

Sorry, but if we all have to follow the same rules here, you have to, also.

Hopefully the edits won't be to severe.

Try posting some of this info next time in a more related post.

Sorry.

The intermittent touch response issues has affected, to one degree or another, all three years of iPad Pro models.

It really started with the introduction of iOS 12 back in Oct., but some iPad Pro users claim this intermittent touch issues started as far back as iOS 11.4.1.

The iOS 12.2 update is supposed to fix the touch issues across all iPad Pro models.

I knew this in advance as I have been following the various beta releases on YouTube and one of the video series on this mentioned this being fixed in iOS 12.2 beta 3 or 4.

Unfortunately, posting our actual email addresses in a public forum, like this, is not a wise idea and there used to be a way to show the email address in our Apple profile section, temporarily when you tap on the image circle.

Unfortunately there is no way to do that any longer.

I could, temporarily, add it into my bio info, but seeing that this is still a public forum I'd still be worried about that.

So, there is no real way to contact me outside of the communities.

I don't do social media, so that is not an option either.

Sorry.

I have an iPad 12.9 (2015) and never had this issue until probably one of the latest iOS 11 or since iOS 12. Now it has become just unbearable, as the device is often rendered useless by a clearly iOS-only-related issue: out of convenience I in fact use the Assistive Touch - which floats a semi-transparent square above whatever app is running, and even when any parts of the screen stops responding within an app (from Apple or 3rd-parties), this ‘floating’ element is not only fully touch-responsive and functioning, but it can still be dragged across the whole screen, with a perfect response to the position and movement of the finger that drags it. So, clearly, it is not a hardware issue (i.e., “it’s not my iPad” to have an issue), or it would affect also this software-created item just like any other element appearing on the screen. It’s instead an iOS-related issue (i.e., “it’s your software to generate the issue, Apple!”), which still allows this iOS-feature to function but leaves any other app temporarily ‘disconnected’ from receiving any input from the screen.

I have just updated to iOS 12.2, and the problem is still there, with no improvement whatsoever.

I’m an early-days iPad user and it’s so frustrating that Apple just doesn’t give a **** about fixing something like this! Why should anyone upgrade to any new iPads, if they report exactly the same type of problems?!

I received my 2018 IPAD Pro 12.9 back from Apple repair on Monday 04/01. They were not able to replicate the touch issue so no repair was done. I reloaded and have been using it now for 4+ days and have not had one failure. So what changed? When I sent it in I was at IOS 12.1.4 and when I got it back it was at 12.2. Not sure what they did in 12.2 but it appears to have fixed the problem. Your post said "The iOS 12.2 update is supposed to fix the touch issues across all iPad Pro models." Did you find a statement from Apple that acknowledges a touch issue in previous IOS releases?

Glad I found this thread as was about to drop my iPad Pro in the bin. Started missing screen interactions (keypad or scrolling etc.) about a month ago. My 12.9” iPad Pro was purchased new just over 18 months ago. Coincidently, my partners iPad ( at least 1.5 years older) also started behaving the same way a few weeks ago. We live in totally separate houses so it’s not environmental.

It does seem to be more effected by contact near the bottom (when in landscape) of the iPad. I’m running 12.2 and it’s still doing it....even while typing this.

Oh please don’t say that as since I upgraded to 12.2 I have been doing fine with mine. Makes me fear a return. Mine was always landscape and particularly the QWERTY area. That’s with my 12.9 2017 it’s replacement AND 2018 12.9. My original 2017 DID do it in the Apple store. They have done it with and without screen protectors...in and out of cases.

I’ve already posted a couple days ago. I’ve had this issue for many months now but have been lazy in pursuing the problem because I am covered by AppleCare.

The most frustrating thing for me was my last call to Apple about this. Over an hour spent with online tech support followed up with a callback from a supposed senior tech advisor and they still don’t want to ship me a replacement. I am still under AppleCare.

I made sure to tell both reps that I have ALREADY done a complete “Erase All Content And Settings” twice...both under iOS 11 and iOS 12. Both times I set up the iPad as a new device and used it for less than a day each time before this same problem showed up again.

Now they want me to do a system restore with iTunes which means far more time wasted. Doesn’t a restore using iTunes on my Mac do the same thing as “Erase All Content And Settings”?????

Apr 6, 2019 5:23 PM in response to clipper99

A system restore from iTunes can be from a backup to iTunes or can be setting up an iPad as new. The way I understand the process, yes it is the same thing. You really shouldn’t blame the reps as they have a certain checklist. When I did mine through them....the original 2017 unit.......if I had performed that step, I told them so. I politely informed them I was not going to go through the same steps over and over. The key is be polite, be kind. These are humans with feelings that want to be helpful. As long as you are nice, they will want to help you. If you need to step up a level, politely ask to escalate. They won’t take it poorly. They will be relieved.

I was very irate earlier in this thread and the moderator edited my post. He was correct in doing so.

Just in case, I would humor them one last time and do the reset the way they ask. My own issue is that I have over 200gb of content on the machine. So it takes forever to restore....even through iTunes.

So far, so good on mine now. Believe me, the smooth typing experience makes so much difference in the perception of the quality and appreciation of the device.
