Error Code -2106F

I purchased a new iMac and decided to wipe the old one clean, reinstall the OS and use it as a backup system. I booted it in Disk Utility, erased the hard drive and then chose the option to install an OS from the internet as opposed to using the original discs. The installation failed. Now if I do a simple restart, I get a question mark. When I try to boot in Disc Utility, I get a message that it has to recover it from the internet. I am asked for my wifi network and password and then get a message that it will take. while. Ultimately I get a message which states:

"Apple.com/support

-2106F"

That is all it states. I have searched online but cannot find what this error code means. Do you have any suggestion as to how I can reinstall an operating system when I can't even boot the computer?

Thanks in advance.

As noted above a 2010 iMac cannot use Internet Recovery Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support

Unless you were booted from either the install dvd or you were using Disk Utility from the recovery partition on the hard drive you would not be able to erase the drive, OS X will not allow the boot volume to be erased. It's not clear exactly what your process was when you erased the drive.

At this point you're going to have one of three things causing your problem,

1. Your installation dvd is damaged.

2. Your internal SuperDrive has failed.

3. Your hard drive has failed, I'm starting to think this is likely.

As I asked before have you tried to Option boot with the installation dvd inserted?

You have another Mac, have you considered trying Target Disk mode to see if the drive shows up and can be repaired using disk Utility on the new Mac? How to use target disk mode to move files to another computer - Apple Support

The version on the disc is 10.6.4. The problem is that I had erased the hard disk prior to attempting to reinstall the OS. Now that the hard disk is complete empty, I cannot access anything at all. The iMac itself is 8 years old. The first time I tried to install the OS, I did so via the internet but got a message that it failed. Since that time, nothing has worked. I just get a flashing question mark and cannot boot from the disc.

I had two partitions on the system prior to this mess. I simply booted using the Command/R function, clicked on each of the partitions and then clicked the "erase" option. After doing this, my plan was to reinstall from the original discs, however immediately upon restarting the computer it asked if I would like to install OSX from the internet. I thought that made sense since I would receive the latest OS. Although the status bar showed completion within a relatively short period of time, a message stated that the system was installing additional components and the estimated time kept climbing until it was at over 11 hours. I decided to just let it run overnight. The next morning I had a failure message. This is when I tried to boot from the install disc. I did try multiple times to do so by booting while holding the C key. Each time I simply get a flashing question mark.

I did not try anything using my new Mac. I was not aware that was an option. I will take a long at the article you provided and let you know if I have any questions. I just don't want to do anything that could mess up on new computer.

I read through the information for creating a bootable installer but don''t think it will work because once the installer is created, I would still need to "Use Startup Manager or Startup Disk preferences to select the bootable installer as the startup disk." Being that I cannot access the Startup Manager or Startup Disk preferences, it appears that I will hit a dead end at this point.
