iOS 11.4 battery drain

My iPhone 6 was working perfectly fine until I updated to iOS 11.4 and ever since I did that my battery is draining rapidly even without me using it at all. I used to go a full day without charging it now it may last half a day. I am just wondering if something got turned on with this new update that I have to turn off to save battery life. It is just weird I have not done anything other than update the iOS and now this happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same issue.

When I look at my battery performance, it shows that the personal hotspot on my phone is being used, though I have never turned it on. I have to keep charging my iPhone every 2-3 hours now.

I charged my iPhone 6 to 100% yesterday morning and then didn't use it all day except for a few text messages. I haven't charged it again (for over 24 hours now) and it's still got 84% of the battery charge. (After I ran the update to 11.4 I was forced to charge it twice a day to keep the battery from going completely dead.) So is it wi-fi or a conflict with Safari or some other software that's trying to use wi-fi in the background?

(I still think it's the FBI and the NSA.) 😉

I have the same issue. 6SPlus. I can't get through a full day anymore on my phone. I just took it off the charger at 8am at 100% and it's 12pm and already down to 40%! And I haven't even USED the phone except a few checks of email. There is definitely something very wrong. I just had a new battery put in a few months ago and my battery performance is at 98%. So the battery is fine - it's the software or some app used by the updated software that is draining the battery to nothing. Initially my firefox browser indicated the most battery use - so I uninstalled it -now my Outlook app is showing the most battery use. Either these apps aren't playing nicely with 11.4 update - or it's something else related to 11.4. Apple needs to patch this ASAP.

Okay, I went through my Iphone and turned off things I don't need or use. Notifications for certain apps, find my phone, etc. I noticed a significant improvement in my battery charge. I went to bed with about 80 percent and woke up with 69 percent and I am able to get through the day and most of the night on one charge. After reading about 5G vs 2.4G I connected my wifi to 2.4 this morning to see if there is any difference. Will report back.

I had the same issue. When connected to a 5GHz network my 6s got hot and drained the battery extremely fast. This morning I upgraded to 11.4.1 beta 4 and that seemed to solve my problem. I now have 77% battery left after a day of light usage instead of it being completely dead after a couple of hours.

To upgrade to 11.4.1 beta 4 you will need to enroll to the Apple Beta Software Program. Unfortunately, when I look at the corresponding page I now only see references to enroll to try ios 12 (I enrolled a couple of days earlier in the hope a beta version would fix this problem).Maybe someone else knows how you can still get into the ios 11 beta program.

Otherwise I would suggest not connecting to 5Ghz networks (turn them off if you can) and keep a charger nearby until ios 11.4.1 is released to the public.

While I can appreciate your frustration and I support any persons right to choose who they give there hard earned cash too, I’m not sure the grass is always greener... Let’s face it, if you had been a certain phone manufacturer user a year or so ago that device could have gone up in smoke inside your pocket, plus there temporary solution at the time was to limit charge capacity!

This run-away-battery issue that certain user’s are experiencing no matter how common on this forum (24 pages and counting) is still a very small fraction of actual iPhone owners, just count the names and then times by 100, 1000 or even 10,000 to allow for those that just don’t bother with forums, and you still don’t get close to a fraction of a percent of total iPhone sales over the last 5 years.

The issue must be unusual due to the fact the common ”Restore as New” fix doesn’t appear to make any difference, and that could be the reason why it’s taking a little longer to resolve, but I’ve noticed a few posts now that seem to give some hope that 11.4.1 beta does in fact correct the issue. But as we’ve seen in the past what’s in a beta doesn’t always continue through to public release, so time will tell.

As I’ve stated before my two devices appear unaffected, but I’m not sure why. I don’t use Two-Factor, Mail is still old style POP, haven’t setup iCloud Messages yet, don’t use any of the iCloud Photo options or iCloud BackUp (again still old school using iTunes), so may be that’s allowed me to dodge the issue.

Anyhow, best of luck with your Android device, which ever one it is!

That is certainly true. Everything is software now and updates are the norm. Unfortunately all possible variables are not tested before the revisions are released. I have seen this first hand in the automotive audio industry.

When I look at all the "advantages" to 11.4 there are not any that I need or want.

I will certainly do much more research before I download newer versions. My other phone has NOT been updated to 11.4 and WON'T be. No problems with that one.

Just tried to make a manual backup of my iPhone because I don't use iCloud. Found out the update turned on iCloud Photo Sharing and My Photo Stream without asking me. Now it won't let me backup my iPhone to my laptop without deleting the photos from my iPhone. I'm beginning to really hate Apple.

I believe the number of variables nowadays is also far greater than yesteryear, just take the iPhone for example, you have numerous models which in themselves can have components sourced from different manufacturers even for the same model, and they all can be running different base versions of iOS to upgrade, it must be a nightmare for coders.

I've had issues in the past with regards to Messages syncing, Podcasts syncing, Continuity, Handoff etc, and when some got fixed others then appeared to break, but at the moment everything I've enabled and use seems to work as intended, but because of prior experience it's the reason I will not yet use iCloud Messages for example, I want the "new" system to establish itself first.

Same problem here with my SE! I’ve already disabled background updates, location in all apps...i’ve even excluded the calendar which i dont’t know how was consuming 25% on background (with all background updates disabled!!!). Apple needs to fix this problem! It is like I have another phone after this stupid ios update! A ****** one!

Hi shankey239

I also recommend restoring your backup. From what I understand it re-applies all your settings which helps, even if your last backup was of the bad 11.4 update. However, it only helped from stopping the dramatic drain of power, not restore it to the healthy low-level drain that was the norm prior to the update. I believe I am not alone in this. Even after restoring from my backup, my phone (Fairly new 6SE) uses between 15 and 25% in 24hours when not in use (I don't use my phone much). Prior to the update my phone only lost 3% in 24 hours when not in use. As so many have done, I also have turned off background app refresh and most of the location service and analytical data settings etc, only keeping enabled what I actually use. I had already done this prior to the 11.4 update and made sure the settings are the same (as much as possible) after the update. I have been monitoring battery use and noting down times and percentage drain, based on different settings (i.e. with Wifi, without Wifi, with 4G enabled, with it turned off, etc). I have not completed my analysis yet, but once completed I will report this to Apple via the bug-reporter. I am a Mac and iOS developer and I still feel there is an issue with 10.4 using to much power when idle.

I too am having the same massive drain issue since the May 11.4 update. My battery health is at 98%. Since the last 11.4.1 came out it has lessened the rapidity of the drain- but it is still obvious. I would like to see a response from apple in regards to their intent to fix this major concern or if the intention is for us all to obtain new devices.
