Hey clemmac,

I hear you're having an issue with GarageBand opening on your iMac. I'd be happy to help out.

In this situation, I'd use the steps here:

If GarageBand for Mac won't open or play back your project - Apple Support

If you're still having issues, continue with reinstalling GarageBand using the steps from that same article:

Reinstall GarageBand

If you still can't resolve your issue, reinstall GarageBand. You don't have to remove everything related to GarageBand, such as projects. You just remove and reinstall the GarageBand application.

To reinstall GarageBand:

  1. In the Finder, choose Applications from the Go menu.
  2. Locate the GarageBand application and drag it to the trash.
  3. Open the Mac App Store
  4. Click Purchased in the Mac App Store toolbar.
  5. Sign into the Mac App Store using the Apple ID you first used to purchase GarageBand.
  6. Look for GarageBand in the list of purchased applications in the App Store. If you don't see GarageBand in the list, make sure it's not hidden. See Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store for more information.
  7. Select Install to download and install GarageBand.
Cheers!

There's a thread somewhere on here about this. Garageband for Mac on High Sierra appears not to work with AU plugins.

I use Ableton Live mostly but installed Garageband on my phone to check it out. When I then installed the desktop version on my Mac Mini I had an ordeal of constantly having to force quit as all the error messages came up about various AU's not working (I have dozens on my system) and it kept freezing. I can use Garageband, but don't think I have access to any AU plugins from within it.

I assume this issue doesn't affect Logic Pro, so am at a loss why it should be a major issue for Garageband, but there you go.
