Watch OS 4.3.1 battery drain

I am experiencing massive battery issues after updating my Apple Watch (1st gen) to os 4.3.1

Before the update it would last for a full day with some charge (~20%) left in the evening. Now, after the update the battery is completely drained after 4 hours from disconnecting it from the charger, making the watch completely unusable.

Is there a way to downgrade the software, so I can use it back again? Such a decrease in battery performance the next day after the update cannot be a coincidence, clearly something is wrong with the new software.

I have followed all the steps mentioned here, on top of that I’ve removed all apps from my watch. This resulted in a small increase in battery life, however the issue remains - the battery won’t last through a long day.

I get a feeling that Apple is simply trying to force people to replace their watches by making them unusable through software updates.

Also a lesson for me not to install updates without checking online forums first.

4.3.1 has about destroyed my watch. Initially was getting 6-7 hours of battery when the only think turned on what step and heart tracking. Doing anything else took it down to less than 5. I wiped the watch and restored from backup. Battery is still not as good, but I can get 12 hours with some other usage and only be down to about 25# remaining.

HOWEVER, I have never been able to get contacts to sync correctly I get just numbers and over for favs). And it loses WiFi constantly so that it’s is worthless for getting text message or making calls unless phone is nearby and then why wouldn’t I just use phone. AVOID 4.3.1 at all cost.

Hey there:

I'm experiencing this issue as well. Hopefully others will decide to follow or post a reply in this thread to give apple support a good idea of the impact this is having on their Apple Watch product and customers. I have a 1st Gen watch, and the battery lasted for a full 20 hours, but now is down to 8 hours or less before hitting 10%. I've reconfigured everything to work at the minimum level possible, but haven't found a good solution.

As a software developer, I understand the need to prioritize help requests depending on the level of urgency and impact, so I'm hoping this is one on which they are working. It would be great if you (Apple Support) could acknowledge whether or not it is on your radar, that we are valued customers, and that there is a plan to resolve the problem soon.

Thanks in advance!

Ah this is ridiculous. I'd found settings that allowed my battery to last until the end of the work day (so 100% discharge from 6am through to 5.30pm) and now Apple have pushed out another update which means the battery runs out even earlier.

This is appalling from Apple. No acknowledgement of our issues on this forum and pushing out updates to silently migrate us all towards newer versions of the watch. Really poor.

Had this EXACT same issue, in fact got to the point where a 38mm series 3 wouldn't take a charge at all anymore, but it did begin with the "Flipping back and forth" you describe. Watch was < 30 days old, apple replaced it. However, battery life on the replacement watch is now doing the exact same thing (1 day ok, next day only lasts 2 hours).

So I am having the same problem. I have done a hard reset and set all settings to save power where possible. I was wondering if anyone else here having this problem is running the beta iOS on my iPhone like I am. Don’t know if this would have anything to do with it. At this point I’m so frustrated I’m looking at any possibilities. Hoping that Apple will come up with a fix. Basically making it not worth having the watch if I can’t use any of the features.

I'm running watchOS 4.3.2 (15U70) on the original 42mm Apple Watch and I'm getting this issue. I could go from 7am to 10pm with 20% remaining on average but in the last week I've been at 0% at 5pm. I didn't notice the issue on 4.3.1. Are the people with battery drain issues on 4.3.1 still having problems on watchOS version 4.3.2?

It appears, from reports on this thread, that resetting the watch isn't helping the battery drain issue. Has anyone tried factory resetting the iPhone? Perhaps the iPhone is asking for too many updates from the watch or something.

I might try that and report back.

After seven days of ridiculously short battery life my watch battery suddenly went back to normal.

From battery going to zero from 6am to 5pm, it now can go for a day and a half (still has 25% even well into the night eg. 3am).

It may have been some app interacting with the last watchOS. Can't say which app (or confirm an app was even the culprit) but I deleted a bunch of apps on the iPhone the day before battery life suddenly came back. Hope that helps others.

I have a series 2 and have the same battery issue after the latest update. I even turned off the raise to wake option and still have the battery issue. What’s even more a mystery to me is that after it is charged to 100% and is removed from the charger and laid flat on the dresser overnight (7 hours) it is at 55% when I wake up in the morning. I have to put it back on charger while I get ready for the day. I don’t have any heart rate or those kind of apps active. My watch dies within 13 hours from a full charge.
