iPad Air 2 Battery Usage (Standby ONLY): iOS 11.4

Recently I noticed that my iPad Air 2's battery seems to be draining unreasonably fast just in standby mode.

Just yesterday I worked with Apple Support to troubleshoot.

Diagnosis was run on it and I was told according to it, everything seemed fine.

I was told to restore the iPad Air to factory settings so I did.

So last night it was at about 53%.

This morning it came to 46%.

However when I got home from work at around 6:50pm, it came to 14%.

It was on standby all the way.

No app was running, Bluetooth was off, location service was off, nothing was on except for Wifi.

The math just doesn't seem to add up at all.

Anybody think it's worth taking to an Apple Store to have it checked?

Any suggestion is sincerely appreciated.

Things got very busy recently and I completely forgot about this until I saw the notification regarding your response.

I am very sorry about this.

Here's an update, although I don't know if this would be helpful for you.

My Wifi at my house has 2 channels, 5.0GHZ and 2.4GHZ.

I switched to 2.4GHZ from 5.0GHZ and the seemingly broken fast battery drain stopped.

I found this out one day when I brought my iPad to my office and connected it to our company Wifi and saw that the battery literally didn't drop 1 percent throughout around 8 hours.

What I don't understand is that, my iPad has been connected to 5.0GHZ at my house all this time.

It wasn't until the time around when I asked the question did this battery drain incident take place.

But the battery did stop draining like crazy now that I switched to 2.4GHZ.

I suspect it has something to do with the upgrade as you pointed out.

I have this same problem. I recently received a new iPhone 7 as a replacement for a malfunctioning one when I discovered the severe battery drain. I turned off all networking except cellular, shut off location services, closed all apps, fully charged the phone, unplugged it, locked it, and left it overnight. In the morning I checked the battery settings and the usage and standby figures were identical. This should not be. Something is causing a drain on the battery and too many people are having the same problem after upgrading to 11.4.

I had done everything I was supposed to (turned of background updates to only the eccentrically programs, turned my lock time out to 30 seconds, etc.) and I keep most of my devices on the 2Ghz band already, but thinking about what you said I tried an experiment.

I shut my WiFi off completely on my iPhone (the device I was having the issue with), charged it up, and used it as I normally would with the WiFi off. Battery usage is back towards normal with Usage and Standby being separated by about 50-60%.

Perhaps there is a hiccup in the WiFi code of 11.4 that it is constantly active rather than intermittently sending a ping to search for open WiFi networks.

Having said all of that I am going to also double check my Airport to make sure it is up to date, reset it and try a few different tests with my phone and iPad to see.
