Is there a risk of losing old notes "on my iphone" when upgrading notes?

Hi,
Is there any risk of losing the old notes that are "on my iphone" when upgrading the notes app on your iphone? Does anyone have experience of upgrading it while having old notes stored on the phone. I've tried moving them to a folder but it seems to be impossible until I've upgraded the app (for now I can't even see the folder I created on my computer).

Much appreciated.

If you recall, there were changes in iOS 9 to add new features to Notes. Users could install iOS 9 w/o having to "upgrade" their notes to incorporate these changes. Conceivably, one could have opted out of that "upgrade" through subsequent iOS releases.

That could be what the OP is referring to, not an iOS update. In my own experience, doing the upgrade after installing iOS 9 resulted in no loss of notes, but all my notes were in iCloud to begin with so I can't speak to the reliability of the upgrade's impact on locally-saved (on-device) notes. I do know that one can currently save notes locally and in iCloud, so presumably the upgrade would preserve on-device notes.

Hi

I don't use my pc for backup I always use iCloud if you have iCloud backup turned on

When you charge an iphone /ipad it automatically backs up to iCloud Over your wifi.

If you buy a new iPhone or put your iPhone back to factory settings

When you set up it will ask if you want to use iCloud backup Say yes you can choose

From a backup when everything was working.

Go to books download ios 11 user guide & iPhone guide for your model of iPhone.

Spot on. This is exactly what I was referring to –maybe I should have made it more clear to begin with..

I now recall (didn't think of it before) that i opted out on upgrading notes since I had this huge bundle of notes from before I was using iCloud for them. Thanks for clarifying. Hope there'll be someone whom had some notes not in the cloud that can share their experience.

Sorry for not being more elaborate. I was going for brief and concrete; obviously I failed miserably.

It is as rockmyplimsoul wrote below. I didn't choose to upgrade my notes app, when upgrading to ios 10, since I was afraid I'd loose the other notes that weren't in iCloud, and also I hadn't upgraded my macbook air, 11-inch, from mid 2012 yet (and they would therefore, as I recall, no longer sync if I did), since I didn't want the hassel and loss of performance that comes with it (now however I'm forced to).

So now that I've upgraded my macbook I thought I might as well upgrade the notes app. But the reason for postponing it in the first place more or less remains –will I lose the files not uploaded in the cloud? There is, however, an option whereby you could move the files "in my iphone"-folder to a folder within the iCloud account (which would solve my doubts). I have created a folder in notes on my macbook for this purpose but it doesn't show on my iphone (since, probably, the app is not upgraded yet).

Well, notes is a built-in app (part of iOS), and it is updated only during an iOS update.

I use notes since the iPhone 3g was released, and notes have always been on my iphone. I've never lost a note during updates nor during iPhones changes (swapping).

On my actual iPhone 7 I have some notes dated 2009 (obviously backing them up on a regular basis on my computer using iTunes, then restoring them from my backups).

And, please, can you better explain what you're trying to do when you say: I've tried moving them to a folder but it seems to be impossible until I've upgraded the app (for now I can't even see the folder I created on my computer).???

Regards

Giulio
