I attempted to upgrade to Sierra, because my App Store recommended it. With it stuck at 30 minutes remaining for almost ten hours, I finally turned off the computer by holding he power button. Now the screen only flashes a white file with a question mark on it. How do I use my computer?
Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and reinstall the system.

And how long should it take? After 11 hours, it froze last time. It currently is sitting at ‘About 27 minutes remaining’, and has been so for about half an hour.
The last time I did a reinstall it took me about 90 minutes.
Update failed, and the computer won’t show data anymore - how do I fix this?
