damaged iTunes Library.itl

Having stored my iTunes library on an external hard drive I can't open iTunes anymore because the iTunes library seems to be damaged - how do I get access again? The notice I receive is the following:

The file “iTunes Library.itl” does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to “iTunes Library (Damaged)”.
