what is .afa file

I had my hard drive data rescued and put on a new hard drive. Some files, mostly scanned photos, came over as .afa and .aft suffix. I can't open them. What do I do>

File saved but not there... I recently decided to stop using a file so I renamed it with the word "RETIRED" so it was easier to know what numbers file I will usually want to open in that folder in the future. After renaming from the top middle part of numbers, I saved the file and then double checked the folder in finder expecting to see the renamed file. When I open the file (from finder), I only see the old file so I check the recent menu from numbers and see the new file. Opening the new "RETIRED" file from recents and checking the file structure from numbers, it's saying it the new file is the only one that exists. This file is on a NAS drive, I tried restarting the mac and am running 10.15.7

Old files created before extensions on the Mac became standard, and have become exec files. I have old files on a CD (a la 1999) that were created before extensions on the Mac became standard, and have become exec files. They have never been near a Windows computer. What is the best way to access them? The Word files seem to be fine, so these may have been Quark or Apple Works. Currently on an iMac OS X El Capitan. Can't remember which computer I had when these files were saved.

Ask the data rescue people what they did and how to proceed. I doubt you had any of those files on your drive. Either they created them, or they miss-identified the file types.
