5K iMac Speed Tests Macintosh HD

I've seen variations of this problem but no real answers.

I want to test the speed of my iMac 5K's hard drive. Simple enough. But running Blackmagicdesign's Disk Speed Test will only bring up a window saying

_____

Disk Speed Test cannot be run on the selected

location because it is read only.

Please select another location which data can be

read and written to. OK?

– – – –

Well, okay, I open the drive's Info window and see that Everyone can only Read Only, so I use my Admin password to UNLOCK the drive and attempt to allow Everyone to Read & Write so I can do my speed test, but the iMac has this accusation window alert:

_____

The operation can't be completed because

you don't have the necessary permission.

– – – –

Nyaa! So There. The Sharing & Permissions window is locked out, even though the Info window is unlocked.

B' b' b' but iMac, I am the one and only administrator! What are you REALLY trying to tell me? Admin passwords don't really do what you ask? Admin passwording is a bad idea in this case? You have some other guy who is the real Administrator for this computer?

Wha?

iMac with Retina 5K display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.5), 16 GB

This type of question really belongs on the Black Magic support site where this issue has been discussed and workarounds provided. The workaround basically says to point the test to a folder on your volume since the test will fail if you point it to the OS root volume. The instructions given are:

1) Create a folder in your SSD, and share it with public

2) You will be asked Admin Username & Password

3) Now point your test to that folder and it will work

Excellent! This is the kind of answer I was hoping for. I had guessed that maybe it was a bad idea to run a speed test on the boot drive but nothing in the automatic response inside Apple’s operating system gave any clue that something like that was a foot. One note extra in their admonition alert could have prevented frustration.

”A speed test on the boot drive won’t work. Other options here.” (Link)

Kappy has more points than you, but you have far more class. And the better answer.
