What software update is needed to connect to iPhone 7?

Today, when I tried syncing my iPhone and iPad, I got a prompt to update software.

User uploaded file

But every time I told it to install, this error appears:

User uploaded file

It doesn't say if my Mac needs it or my devices, but there was a MacOS 10.13.6 update waiting, so I installed it.

As for the update in the dialog failing, it seems to be saying the update Apple is demanding I install to sync my devices is not on the update server. It happened before and after the 10.13.6 update and with both my phone and my iPad. iTunes doesn't even see them.

Now what?

Thanks. Rob

You need to update iTunes to the current version. If you have problems doing it through the app store, download it directly to your Mac from iTunes.com and install it from there.

[SOLVED] Hey guys, i had this problem too for a few days while trying to connect my iPhone 8 to iTunes. As you guessed it, click on install -> downloading item -> Installation failed. i am running the latest iOS 12.1 on my iPhone 8, latest MacOS Mojave 10.14.1 on my 27" iMac late 2013, and iTunes 12.9.0.164. All my Apps are updated as well.

Called Apple support, was told to Reset NVRAM and Systems Management Controller (SMC), and to check that my date and time was set correctly on my iMac. Was told to try different cables to connect my iPhone 8 to iMac, used my old original apple cable from my iPhone 6. All these DID NOT WORK.

I downloaded Xcode as well. DID NOT WORK too.

So i read here that some guys used different cables (no brand) and it worked. So i remembered i have another original apple cable in my car, gave it a last try and this time it WORKED. Finally i could connect my iphone 8 to iTunes. Previously i could have used my wife's iPhone 7Plus cable and it did not work.

So the moral of the story is -> try using different cables and try different methods because YOU NEVER KNOW!

Good Luck!!

I had this issue when I also updated my MacBookPro and iPhone X to mohave and IOS 12.i have installed Xcode and I have virtually done anything I could find on apple support but my MacBook keeps asking for updates anytime I connect my phone

I got this solution out of serendipity though......my MacBook pro15 2015, I realised only comes with only Usb 3.0....

I have a SABRENT USB hub that has USD 2.0 port and so I wanted to find out if perhaps the issues would be related to the phones connection using the usb 3.0

To my surprise anytime I connected the phone Via usb 2.0, this error of persistent updates doesn't occur but if I I connect directly to my MacBook usb 3.0 port it does.

I've tried on other MacBook with other friends who have the same issue and it worked. so my best bet is to get a usb 2.0 hub

Hope it helps

Hi there.

If that's still an issue, I found yet another solution.

Sometimes the dialog appears when you're using a wrong cable. In my case I've used airPods cable and it has been giving me the dialog all way long. Then I did nothing but changed the cable to the proper one (need to say that both of them were brand new) and the iPhone has connected successfully.

As far as I understand that, it probably could be that the cables are somehow different (id, power or whatever) and this difference is crucial for the connection.

Hope it helps.

I'm not sure why this suddenly reawakened...But,

As of this afternoon I'm no longer getting that dialog and probably haven't for a few weeks. My Macs are running MacOS 10.13.6 and iTunes is 12.8.0.150, which haven't updated since 9 July. My iPhone 7 and iPad Pro are running iOS 12.0; that has updated since then and likely cleared up the dialog problem.

But I do still occasionally, like this afternoon, get a warning on my phone when plugging into USB about connecting USB devices to my phone. Does plugging the phone into its linked computer really "connecting a device"?

The problem went away for a couple of days but returned with a vengeance. It kept looping, restarting iTunes whenever I'd kill it or reboot. When I turned off my iPad, rebooted, then turned it on, it also kept wanting me to enter my passcode, but only gave me part of a second to do so. (My iPhone connects fine, the app store thinks I'm up to date, both my Mac and my iPad think they have current operating systems).

I got this message yesterday for the first time when trying to sync my iPhone 7 which I had just updated to iOS 12.

After a few goes it looks like some kind of update was installed.

However, after the back up and sync of my phone had finished, I noticed that suddenly my system HD had about 45GB more data on it !! My system drive is a 1TB SSD factory drive formatted with AFPS.

What is going on ?

When I used Superduper to do a back up clone it ended up with about 45GB less data in it that the system drive.

So it seems there is some weird duplication thing going on with the SSD ?

Any suggestion on how to get rid of the extra data please ??
