new Macbook pro 2018 random restarts

Just bought it yesterday and it restarted randomly twice today while it was idle.

The phone support was useless.

It's the new 2018 version 15 inch, CPU 2.6, 512GB SSD.

Did it happen to anyone else with this newly introduce MacBook pro?

Thanks.

MacBook Pro TouchBar and Touch ID, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

OK, thanks. I'll post here if it happens again.

I do have these two options checked “Download newly available updates in the background.” and “Install system data files and security updates.”.

It doesn't say anything about restart so I assume with these options checked it shouldn't automatically restart.

Regardless the checkboxes above, the first time it restarted, it was freezing for 20 seconds and then it restarted. So the first time wasn't related to updates for sure.

Jul 18, 2018 4:40 AM in response to DavidMBP2018

Sadly, it happened again. 10 minutes ago.

I woke up, I was able to open an app (Slack), and interact with it for a minute, after that it suddenly froze for 5 seconds and restarted.

Attached the report.

The restart happened exactly at 7:27AM EST.

Thanks!

It looks like I still need to do more with homebrew.

But your shutdown code is interesting. Unfortunately, Apple has never published its internal lists of shutdown codes and meanings. There are some leaked documents online, but generally it is a mystery.

When I do a search for "Last Shutdown Cause: -20 - Unknown" the only hits are from EtreCheck reports run on an iMac Pro. This is the only other Mac that has a Secure Enclave with embedded iOS and ARM chip. It seems reasonable to assume that -20 is a panic or crash related to that embedded system and that is what triggers the restart.

Do you have any other cryptic diagnostic files on or around 2018-07-18 07:28:02? That might help shed some light on the problem.

However, I don't think this is anything you are going to be able to fix yourself. I would appreciate any additional information you could post that might help EtreCheck identify and report this problem. But ultimately, you are going to have to take that machine back to Apple. They might also be interested in those diagnostic files.

Jul 18, 2018 6:31 AM in response to etresoft

Yep, that what I was thinking this morning. I will just return the laptop and buy a new one.

It's just very frustrating. I worked an entire day to set it up 😟

Regarding the error, yes, it did create a 'panic' log file at /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ProxiedDevice-Bridge/Retired/panic-full-2018-07 -18-112726.712.ips

Code for MacOS and all Applications (including third party Applications DOES NOT modify itself. Every setting is stored separate from the code, in a file, typically a .plist file. There are very few of these that are system-wide. Almost everything goes in a User Directory, often in

~/Library...

,,, where the tilde is an active shortcut for "current user" that is honored throughout the File system.

Jul 18, 2018 8:29 PM in response to DavidMBP2018

David,

You are correct about the behaviour of homebrew and the software it installs. It isn't in your home directory.

However, that won't be a problem for Time Machine. It can restore all those files and make your new machine a clone of the old one.

The only time you have to be careful with this is when you try to use Time Machine to make a clone of an existing machine and then use both. There are some subtle problems with doing that. But if the new machine replaces the old one, Time Machine will restore it just fine.

Jul 19, 2018 4:26 AM in response to etresoft

Oh OK, I didn't know it's possible to accomplish that with Time Machine.

Back then, 15 years ago, when I was working on Windows, I remember that cloning from one computer to another wasn't recommended because the hardware isn't identical. (even when the hardware is similar, the IDs of the hardware are not the same). And as a result, it may cause issues along the way. I guess it's different on Mac.

I have exactly the same problem, bought the new MBP 2018 core i7 15 inch, CPU 2.6, 512GB SSD several days ago, and almost anytime the MPB sleeps for a long time, it reboots after waking up.

I see many "panic" file logs in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ProxiedDevice-Bridge/ (one per day)

For what its worth, I took my 13" Quadcore 500gig 16 gig RAM back to Apple store and after they asked a few questions about what I have done to attempt to resolve they offered to replace the device with what they had in the store.

They only had the 1Tb device in a like configuration, I did a little negotiation with them to not have to eat the full upgrade cost and essentially they said if I buy AppleCare on the spot with some business discounts it was pretty close to a wash.

I have been running this Mac in the same fashion I was the other with the same software, etc. and I have yet to have any resets in two and a half days.

I will keep everybody apprised.
