How do I set up a pop email account in OS v.10.13

I've had a pop account with Comcast mail that I've been transferring from each new Mac I've purchased. The HDD that I had this on had a S.M.A.R.T. error and it would allow me to use any of the data on the drive, so I lost a lot of old email. Now I cannot seem to creat a new pop account. Apparently, High Sierra only supports IMAP accounts. Is there any way I can create a new pop account so I can store email on my computer and erase email from my server after it's downloaded? Barring that, can I set up an IMAP account to erase emails from the Comcast server after emails are downloaded? Any help would be appreciated.

Mac Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), Mac Pro 6.1

Another way is to put in a completely bogus email address and psswd, this will trick the Mail app to open the dialog box. Then you can proceed making all the changes for your new account, including Account Type—POP

Hi,

When you click on the button [+] is your provider appears in the top list, or do you use "Other Mail Account..."?

Because if your provider is in the top list, it's possible that its particular settings are already recorded and that it doesn't let you choice of the protocol to connect its servers.

(Possible, I don't know, I hate IMAP LOL).

Best Regards.

You can "force" the email server settings to override Apple's "automatic" email account configuration that uses your email address.

To do so:

  • Run the Mail app.
  • From the app's menu bar, select: Mail > Preferences > Accounts
  • Create a new email account by clicking on the "+" button.
  • Choose "Other Mail Account…"
  • At the first screen enter your name, email address, and password.
  • BEFORE clicking on Sign In, hold down the Option key, and then, click on Sign In.
  • You will now have the opportunity to enter both the account type (POP or IMAP) and the Incoming (POP or IMAP) and Outgoing (SMTP) servers used by your email provider.

Hi,

Check if your Internet connection is active/fluid

Open Apple Mail.

-> menu Mail -> Preferences... -> Accounts tab

(NB: NOT Mail -> Accounts...) (yes, I know, I know, it's "supposed" to be the same...)

Click the button [+] bottom-left of field to add a new account.

If your provider isn't in the primary choices, click "Other Mail Account..."

Select POP3 in Account Type (if POP3, of course) (I know many people here use IMAP... I definitely prefer POP3).

In the "Email Address" field, type your (cough) e-mail address...

In the field "Full Name", type the name you want to show when people receive your e-mails (e.g.: John Doe).

In the "Incoming Mail Server" enter the name of your e-mail server (furnished by your mail provider). Should be something like: mail.yourprovider.com

In the "User Name" field, enter the username that you must use to connect to this server.

Enter your password in the "Password" field.

In the "Outgoing Mail Server", enter the name of your e-mail server (SMTP) should be something like smtp.yourprovider.com (or again mail.yourprovider.com).

Click OK.

Starting from there, macOS should find back its cubs, test connection to your mail server and (cough) succeed.

Regards.
