This discussion may help ios 11.4.1 WiFi issue
From what I’ve read and previously experienced you could try “Forget this Network” under your WiFi Settings then reconnect again, “Resetting Network Settings”, reboot both your iPhone and your Router and last try the other wireless section if dual band.
With respect to the bands, if you usually use 5Ghz then try 2.4Ghz, but also try turning 5Ghz completely off as well, in others words you turn a dual band into a one band unit.
ps. It appears the latest iOS 11.4.1 has introduced this issue for some and will probably require Apple to fix in a future update, so above are just temporary “work around”.
Thanks wendy_is. Yeah, it’s definitely not a chipset problem, especially regarding older routers, as this would have been a persistent issue over many releases of the OS and would have affected other device manufacturers too. When you think about it, the only change that occurred was the software update from 11.4 to 11.4.1, and 11.4 was working just fine with those chips. Apple just seems to have a hard time acknowledging culpability, which is a real shame, because most people have more respect for companies that acknowledge mistakes and show earnest efforts to correct such mistakes than those that try to shift blame and throw out red herrings in an attempt to obfuscate a situation.
Just tried this after having the problem since the last update too. Sadly it's made no difference whatsoever. I get quite excited for about two minutes when things seem to be working then it drops the wi-fi again. Done all of the previous together with taking my phone into the Apple shop where they suggested a full reset a few weeks ago (which I had to pay for). Sadly nothing has worked. It's so frustrating, feel like throwing the darn phone in the nearest bin! All that money and the **** thing is pretty useless.
So after reading through all of the comments I contacted Virgin Media who said its a known problem and to turn off my phone etc etc. i explained I'd already done this and also that the engineers at the Apple shop had stripped it. They are sending me a new router which will 'solve the problem' so watch this space.
Hate to break it to you, but this is not a Virgin Media issue, it’s an Apple iOS issue. I have a DLINK router, which I have been running for years without any problems, and have the exact same problem with this iOS update. No amount of router replacement, resetting, Apple disassembly of your phone, etc. is going to fix a software issue. Virgin Media may have a separate issue with their routers as well, but it is outside of this particular issue. At another site, someone has already reported Apple acknowledging the problem on their end, with a fix not expected to be delivered until the version 12 release. So do not get your hopes up......sorry. 😢
Well Ryzon I have news. The new router arrived today and for the last 90 minutes (since I set it up) I have had super fast and uninterrupted wi-fi. So my friend, you are wrong. In the last five weeks I have been unable to access my home wi go for more than 5 minutes at a time, so this is like heaven to me. The issue is with the update, you are correct, but it is the compatibility with some of the older Virgin Media routers. This is what Virgin tell me and the proof is in me being able to type this reply and post it.
I understand why you would “think” I am wrong, because you have had some level of success in your specific instance. However, before such a definitive conclusion can be made, please be aware that I am not using Virgin Media, and many other people experiencing this issue are also not using Virgin Media, and yet we too have been impacted by the software update. In my case, the only change for years of uninterrupted service has been this software update. So we have years of reliable service of one router compared to 90 minutes of success for your router. I have three other Apple devices and a bunch of other non-Apple devices that work just fine with my well aged DLINK router, because they are not running iOS 11.4.1, so the issue is most definitely the iOS patch. What you are experiencing may be a workaround, in that you simply happened to get a combination of configuration options that just happen to work (at least for now....you may have issues later). However, a workaround is not a fix. The answer is not to tell everyone who has a problem to go out and get a Virgin Media router, model XYZ, or to expect all affected router manufacturers to produce a firmware update or hardware modification to address an incompatibility introducted by Apple, but rather to correct the software bug that Apple introduced. So, no, pretty sure I am not wrong. That being said, I am very happy that your router is working for you, and hope it continues to work. 😁
Many thanks to those in this forum who pointed in the right direction. This issue has been driving me crazy for the last few weeks. My new Virgin router has arrived and is running a treat. My SE has not lost its connection since installed some six hours ago and I'm thrilled! When I contacted Virgin they were well aware of the problem and the new router was free of charge. Thanks again folks!
Could you possibly test one thing when you get a chance? Try to run some types of apps that makes heavy interacive use of the router over a period of time, such interactive games that need to frequently poll their servers. The reason I am asking is because some people, myself included, are not experiencing complete disconnection, but rather experiencing dropouts and delays during certain app execution. Some apps I notice causing me problems are Zynga poker and Golf Clash as examples. Some people have also had problems with the Apple Store timing out, myself included. Things like email and such are not an issue for me, because the transmisssions are conducted in bursts, whereas something like Zynga has to interact with the server continually to constantly keep track of game status as hands are played. You may also not have your router very heavily loaded, which could also be a factor. It would be interesting to see if others with such a router upgrade see all their issues addressed. Pretty sure I have seen others in this thread and elsewhere see a temporary resolution, only to have the issue(s) return. :-/
Sorry to jump in but its safe to say this issue is widespread and not bound to just Virgin. I have the wifi issues on multiple networks including the one at the apple store. Apple has issued a replacement, I hope this ends the issue.
Apple transferred a comment, this bug seems to carry through on unreleased iOS software as well.
Some of the replies state that you should roll back the iOS but as Apple are no longer signing the earlier version we are stuck with 11.4.1 and the bugs it contains. What other solutions are available? A phone that cannot connect to WiFi is ridiculous especially with the data hungry apps out there, let alone my music collection.
Any ideas?
According to a blog apple is aware of this and is working on a fix. It’s been a month now since that message and nothing in sight. It’s also not fair that users are kept waiting so long without an appropriate fix. Thanks to all contributions to this thread.
I tried to answer your request for ideas, but once again the Apple forum-police yanked my post for daring to mention the version 12 beta status, as conveyed by others supposedly involved in the testing. Again, Apple spending more time policing a forum, where people are asking for help and guidance, than actually helping people. Great use of your time and money in “supporting” your customers......thanks, Apple.......for nothing.
Absolutely! My message from yesterday has also disappeared. All I said was that I'm being sent a new virgin hub 3 and will report if it fixes this debacle. What's so wrong with that that it had to be removed???
Luckily, Ryzon, all the useful and informative posts that have been removed (for whatever spurious reasons) are in my email inbox. Unbelievable that this forum is so heavily edited. 1984 and all that.
So this must be an issue on just the iphone 8, still waiting for my replacement iPhone8... This all started with an apple technician breaking my original device while trying to replace a faulty battery.
