Why do I have to use speakerphone on voice calls?

I have an iPhone X with iOS 11.4.1.

I have recently noticed that if I do not use my airPods (which I almost always do), that I have to use speaker to have any audio during a phone call. I have not found any change to settings to restore the capability of using the normal iPhone setting in a phone call. I prefer not to reset my phone to factory as suggested by several tips sites. I will either use speaker setting or my airPods before I resort to resetting to factory, but if anyone knows a way to recover the ability to use the normal iPhone audio in a phone call -- I'd be grateful.

iPhone X, iOS 11.4.1

Greetings Ricky1962,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities! I understand your phone calls are coming through via speakerphone when you don't have your AirPods connected with your iPhone.

The Call Audio Routing setting can be configured to have phone calls automatically routed through the speakerphone. The following support article provides information on how to configure the Call Audio Routing feature: Call audio routing - iPhone User Guide

Call audio routing

You can have the audio of incoming or outgoing calls automatically routed through a headset or speaker phone instead of iPhone.

Reroute audio for calls. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Call Audio Routing, then choose how you want to hear and speak your calls.

If you set that feature to Automatic, are you able to hear your phone calls as normal?

If this behavior isn't related to the Call Audio Routing feature, let's have you review the following support article to see how to switch the audio between your speakers, headphones, and iPhone: Switch the audio on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the issue remains while you have the audio set for your iPhone, I suggest troubleshooting the receiver of the iPhone: If you can't hear a person on a call or voicemail or if the sound isn't clear on your iPhone

Let me know how the provided suggestions work for you.

Kind regards.
