Just bought a homepod and have been trying to get it to play radio stations but has it own ideas I live in the UK is tehre somtehing I need to do ?

HomePod doesn't play Internet Radio stations, however you can use AirPlay to play from iTunes or an iOS device. Use Feedback - HomePod - Apple to request that Apple add native playback of Internet radio to HomePod.
