Photos not uploading to icloud, Photos very slow

Hello

My Photos app is acting all weird. Startup is very slow with beach ball rotating. Once it's finally up i can see that 351 photos (which is almost a month worth) is not uploading to icloud although i have 1,5 TB free space there.

All it shows me is the progress bar and option to press pause. When i press pause and hit resume, no change.

Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm using the 2017 21,5 retina iMac with all the system updates done.

i can not edit the ones whos original files are on icloud.. i think.

All of them or only some?

You said, you can see the files in Photos at www.icloud.com. Have you tried to select one of the photos there and can you download it? This will tell you, if your iCloud account is working or if there is a problem with your library in iCloud.

icloud seems to be fine. i've been frantically downloading original copies of my baby girl.

i've gone randomly back and can see, that the photos on photos which can not be downloaded for editing are infact there on icloud and can be downloaded via the web interface. but as i said i've done random, but so far successful attempts.

could it be that repairing the library somehow messed the match with icloud originals?

is there a point of restoring yesterdays library file.

thank you so much you've been an amazing help!

Only, if the connection had already been broken. A very common reason for broken references between original fies and the thumbnails in the library are cleaning applications, that remove duplicates from the library. There are dangerous versions, that can damage the library. If you have ever been running such software on your Photos Library, it my be better to restore a version of your Photos Library from your backup, from before you did run such programs.

If i accept this, would it mean that my current library stays as it is and the library i just created and set as system library downloads all the photos from icloud?

All photos, that are only optimized will be removed from your previous library, and your new library can be enabled as the iCloud Photo Library will try to download from iCloud.

Please explain 'All photos, that are only optimized will be removed from your previous library'

What to you mean only optimized? Optimized locally and not yet successfully synced to iCloud?

As i can see over 32 000 photos and videos on icloud, all of them which seem to have original files, are safe there when I create a new system library?

I manually exported the originals of some 1700 latest photos from the previous system library (i did the time machine restore, no difference) before reaching the pics where originals are not stored locally and connecting to icloud seems to be not working. Going to the icloud web interface i can see those photos alive and well there.

would you advise creating a new system library, connecting to icloud and syncing all the photos (incl. originals) from icloud server to local photos. and then manually add the ones I exported ultimately leading to restored (or what should be) state.

thanks a bunch!

It means exactly what the screenshot is showing that you posted.

You are having a library, that is currently syncing with iCloud Photo library. It is using the "Optimize Storage" option. And your having some thumbnails in this library, where your Mac is only storing optimized local thumbnails, because it cannot download the originals from iCloud. If you now switch to a different library as your iCloud Photo Library, Phots will have to move the thumbnails for the photos without local copies of the originals from the library on your Mac.This is necessary, because the library will not be able to download the originals from iCloud, if it is no longer your iCloud Photo Library. The originals will remain in iCloud.

Thanx for your efforts léonie. After contacting apple support it has become obvious that the main problem is iCloud - the mac user account associated with apple id is not able to log in on this mac. web and apple music for example are all fine. but it's not logging in through system pref, facetime or messages. we've been trying to fix it with no luck as of yet.
