convert text to table

I have a Macbook Pro 17" early 2011, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

macOS Sierra version 10.12.6

Pages version 7.1 (5683)

I went to Help>Pages help, and typed in "text to table". In the window that opened, I went to "All Other Help (63)", Working with Tables. Clicked on that link. In the window that opened, there is an option that says "Convert text into a table and vice versa, and I clicked on the link "Converting Text to a Table". In the window that opened, it said this:

Here are ways to convert between text and tables:

  • To convert text to a table, select the text, and choose Format > Table > “Convert Text to Table.”When Pages encounters a paragraph return, it creates a new row. When Pages encounters a tab stop, it creates a new column.
  • To convert a table to text, select the table, and choose Format > Table > “Convert Table to Text.”

I said, "Hooray", and went back to Pages version 7.1 (5683)

I selected text, chose Format >Table > , and then......

There's no "Convert Text to Table" option.

Can someone tell me how to convert Text to Table in Pages version version 7.1 (5683)

Please!

Bobby

Hi Bobby,

The Help document you read was written for Pages '09 (aka Pages 4.x), where what you want was accomplished with this menu item:

User uploaded file

Apple did a grounds-up rewrite of Pages for version 5, and Text to Table was one of the more that 100 features of the previous version not to be found in the new application carrying the same name. Some have been included since then, others, including this one, are still missing.

The original depended on your having tab-separated values, with each line/row separated from the next with a return.

If you have that type of text, you can paste it into an open table in Pages, or paste it into an open table in Numbers, then copy that table and paste it into a Pages document.

If memory serves, Numbers or Pages or both now give you an opportunity to specify the separators if they are not tabs. Confirmation of that may come later from someone using Pages 7.1 or Numbers 5.1.

Barry

Tested in Pages 7.1

I selected this tab-separated text in Pages, copied and pasted into a table.

User uploaded file

It went into a single cell, whether I single clicked or double clicked the cell.

I pasted the text into TextEdit, selected, copied and pasted into a Pages table. Hurrah!User uploaded file

Clicking on Adjust Settings does give a choice of separators

So it seems that the table data must actually be imported.

Identical results with Numbers 5.1.

Oh well, we got what we asked for through feedback to Apple!

(Be careful what you ask for. You might get it.)

Regards,

Ian.
