My Ipad thinks my home network is captive when it is not

Hello all,

I see all kinds of issues with the whole captive.apple.com mess but never a solid answer.

I have a new twist on that that I have not seen before.

My Ipad is convinced that my home network is captive. IT IS NOT!!!

I repeat: My home network is not captive!

Anything I do in safari either timesout or takes me to the web page of my home router. Nothing I do gets me past this. It used to work fine then one morning it was stuck.

Here is some details... please read them before you tell me to reboot my router ;-)

There are a total of 7 idevices here. 3 iphones and 4 ipads.

There are two access points but they both go through the same router in the end.

There are great gobs of non-i devices that also work fine ( Android, Windows, Linux, etc..)

All but my iPad work fine. <- Note that!!!

Once it has decided it is captive there is no getting off of it no matter how much resetting of whatever I do!!!

Some internet based applications also continue to work!

I can still telnet / ssh into various servers around the internet just fine. Even while Safari is telling me that I am not connected to the internet!!

I also still get various notifications from the cloud, so it is clearly connected to the outside world!

I also have a couple of internal web servers that it will connect to (They are on the same network )

DNS is also working because I can SSH into a server by name ( both internal and external )

I have rebooted EVERYTHING.

So attempting to connect to Google.com will just take me to the login page of my router.

(If I log into my router...I am logged into my router...thats it !)

Disconnecting and forgetting an acess point just brings up the Captive Network Assistant when I try to reconnect.

My iPad works fine on other networks! If I hotspot my phone it is fine!

Just my home network,

Sorry this is so long. I have been fighting with this for a while!!!!!

I had similar problem, but a little different. Those two home networks you see are probably 2.4 and 5.0. If not, then my experience may not be useful. If so, note that while they are in the same router as you suggest, there are two different radios and you can use router tools to configure them differently. I can help on that if you want. First option is try the 5.0 ghz by choosing it to connect to. It worked on my iPad. Second, I had other devices (Microsoft) that didn’t see the 5.0. After further reading, I used the the xfinity admin tool (xFI) to change the 2.4 ‘channel’ number to ‘1’ and that fixed it. There are two other recommended channels to try, but my first attempt worked! Note that all devices were working inside the house (all devices see each other with excellent signal strength) but couldn’t connect to internet. Helpful?

More data:

As I stated above, it is clearly connected to the internet as I am getting iCloud notifications!

So today I plugged in another wi-fi / router into my existing network.

My iPad connected to that and got an IP address on a different subnet (as expected).

And it all works fine! When I switch back to the normal wi-fi, Safari will not work.

Remember...This wi-fi IS plugged into the regular network that my iPad thinks is captive.

I am beginning to believe that the problem is in Safari. It has 'memorized' that my network is captive maybe?

I have cleared everything I can find to clear out of Safari.

[ Home network is 192.168.73/24 The new Wi-Fi is 192.168.16/24 but routes to NATs to 192.168.73.121

The dhcp from the new wi-fi lease points to 192.168.73.5 for DNS which is correct!]

Total loss here!!!!
