Mail takes ages to load and delete new mail

Mail takes ages to load and delete new mail. This is a new situation that started a few days ago.

Any ideas on how to fix this appreciated.

I agree with Bob about removing the anti-virus programs.

I would uninstall Intego and McAfee. They tend to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files. Most long time posters recommend not using antivirus software or cleaning software such as CleanMyMac.

Have you installed any new software in the last few days?

Try running this program in your normal user account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. You can run the report for free at least once, but if you run it several times, at some point it will ask you to pay a license fee.

Will be interesting to see what you make of this report.

More than one antivirus app - This machine has multiple antivirus apps installed.

Chances are the anti-virus packages are using up all your Mac capacity looking for Windows malware.

The reality is that on the Mac 3rd party anti-virus apps do not seem to find anything Mac specific, and at best waste your Mac resources, at worse decide they have found something and disable a critical file that bricks your Mac or some innocent app.

The ONLY app the long-term forum volunteers recommend is the free MalwareBytes for Mac, and then ONLY running it manually AFTER installing something new. The reason for running it after installing something is that as of today, the only malware that gets installed is something you get tricked into installing. There are no current self-replicating viruses for the Mac. That means if you did not install anything recently, you did not contract anything either.

Strongly suggest you uninstall ALL your anti-virus packages.

Another possibility on your Mail issues is that you have a very old Mac. If your boot disk is the same age, it is possible it is starting to fail.

Mail takes ages to load and delete new mail
