I'm using iTunes 12.8.0.150.
Starting 2-3 updates ago, my sound quality suddenly became very boomy and distorted. It's not poor from my iPhone, only from my laptop. I've tried all kinds of stuff in Edit/Preferences, based on previous posts about this problem, with little or no change.

I've also had an issue similar to this, I was hearing the songs as the bands were playing inside a bathroom and the voice sounded scratched like it came from an old radio. The solution for me was as simple as restarting my MacBook Pro. Hope it helps you
See iTunes for Windows: Adjust the sound quality. Perhaps you have enabled the equalizer with an odd set of settings.

Is it only iTunes, or is it the same with music videos on YouTube for example?

I've compared the same song on iTunes and YouTube and YT sounds great.
I can't remember exactly which update it was, but the problem started first thing after a fairly recent iTunes update.
I was hoping Apple would address it in future updates, but I've updated once or twice more and no improvement.

I've messed extensively with the equalizer, including turning it off and on altogether. No luck there. It doesn't seem to do much.
