Kernel Panic from GPU Driver High Sierra MacBook Pro 2017

Hi all,

For the last few days, I have been experiencing kernel panics which seem to be stemming from some graphics issue. I've tried searching around online and found some similar reports, but nothing that seems to help me solve the problem. I am thinking about taking it in to an Apple Store for advisement but I figured I would check online first. Below is the report. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but the first two times it occurred while watching videos, while the third time (which the report below is from) I don't recall watching anything though something may have been playing in the Chrome that I didn't notice. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

All,

interesting feedback which may be useful for all those who have experienced issues lately on MBP : see Programme de réparation du lecteur SSD sur les MacBook Pro 13 pouces (sans Touch Bar) - Assistance Apple

My MBP was still in repair. Repair guy says that the random issue they were also witnessing seems to have disappeared since they applied this SSD kernel update!!

Fingers crossed!

ShadowMac77, please let us know what the result from your evaluation at the Apple Store was. Thanks!

I've got a Genius Bar appointment today for the same exact panic report and will report back with what they say. Mine crashed while zooming in/out on Google Maps using Chrome. I'm still within the 14 day return window, but if this is a software or driver issue then maybe I won't return the unit. However, I'm suspicious since my older 2013 MacBook Pro 15 was the model affected by the GPU panic crashes and that problem only began AFTER the free recall period was over... I really don't want to be left with another MacBook Pro that Apple doesn't acknowledge has a graphics problem until it's too late.

Hi alonpr,

I had a Genius Bar appointment where I showed my crash report (identical to ShadowMac77's with affected GPUDriversIntel) and described the context. Unfortunately, they did not want to run a diagnostic because my MBP13 is within the return window. Instead they offered to simply exchange the laptop for a new one, and even extended my return period to 30 days so I can think about it. I know this isn't helpful for diagnosing the root cause of the issue, but wanted to give an update.

I decided to just buy a refurb MBP13 from the Apple website, return my existing laptop, and pocket the $300+ difference. Hope the problem doesn't recur on the refurb!

Im having similar issue,

I bought my Macbook pro a year ago and started using it just recently, it just freezes and then crashes and reboots and the log shows the same as your error.. Im new to MAC but i find it annoying .. at-least it crash once every time I use it .hope this is software issue and apple knows about it and working on a fix next update, specially if more than one person getting the same thing .

Thanks

Yes, it happens when I'm using chrome, it freezes for few seconds then it crashes, also I'm thinking it could be McAfee antivirus which I uninstalled which I thought it might issue.. uninstalled chrome and reinstalled .. still crashes, I believe it started after the last update.. not sure. But I can confirm it crashes when when using chrome..

Thanks

I have this issue too. It happens to me 2-3 times a month. It's always happening when I'm using Chrome. So I guess it's somehow related to Chrome.

Hi all,

I take it back,

My mac just crashed, so it's not antivirus or addons or plugin.. I guess it's going to be an issue as I think apple might say its chrome and chrome will say its mac OS..anyway, not sure if it's only chrome issue, I will start using the native browser and hopefully its doesn't happen.

I dont think Disabling the accelerater should be the resolution, many people reporting the issue and let's hope it will be fixed in the next release as it started to be annoying:), :)

Thanks

Hi all.

Don't think this is connected to Chrome, though it might be connected to some resourceful processes, as I read that someone got this crash during video render and I got this crash during videogame, and now during using Chrome for the first time, which frustrate me a bit. Hopefully this is some OS bug and will be fixed soon, as a lot of these reports started to come from July\August, since the last update as far as I understood. And really a lot of reports on this crash, so I really hope that they will do something about it. I heard a lot of good things about macs and I switched pc to mac not for crashes during just browsing Chrome, that's a bit sad

Sep 9, 2018 4:01 PM in response to ShadowMac77

Exact same kernel panic for me as well. It also happens when I use Chrome but I know that user applications cannot be the root cause of kernel panics. The bug is with the graphics driver (the panic dump reveals this). My guess is that Chrome is using a new feature that wasn't tested properly or the underlying driver has changed.

The fact that there is a feature called "Use hardware acceleration when available" screams to me that Chrome has surfaced a bug in the GPU driver. This is a potential security threat since clever software writers could abuse this bug.

The problem occurs in any browser on sites with a lot of advertising. Or maybe with some kind of advertising. A more detailed analysis was not conducted and it would be good if anything were done by the QA of the Apple, not by the customers.

The problem was reproduced for several months. It is unfortunate that Apple did not take care of its customers throughout this time. This is a huge step back in the quality of products from Apple 😠
