Kernel Panic from GPU Driver High Sierra MacBook Pro 2017

Hi all,

For the last few days, I have been experiencing kernel panics which seem to be stemming from some graphics issue. I've tried searching around online and found some similar reports, but nothing that seems to help me solve the problem. I am thinking about taking it in to an Apple Store for advisement but I figured I would check online first. Below is the report. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but the first two times it occurred while watching videos, while the third time (which the report below is from) I don't recall watching anything though something may have been playing in the Chrome that I didn't notice. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Guys,

Try to turn off "Use hardware acceleration when available" in chrome:

Settings--> Scroll Down to Advanced --> Scroll down to System and turn it off.

So far I had few days already without Kernel Panic

I have this issue too. It happens to me 2-3 times a month. It's always happening when I'm using Chrome. So I guess it's somehow related to Chrome.

I have already mentioned I had that problem too. What I did so far is:

- smc/nvram reset

- os reinstall

- entirely stopped using Chrome and Safari

- run the built-in diagnostics tools (nothing found)

I'm using Opera only for at least two weeks already and getting no screen freezes and kernel panics anymore.

I know it can be just a coincidence so will let you know if it comes back.

The only thing that I keep getting from time to time is when I open the lid then I get a "snowy" screen for a second or two.

I had that before on my Mac back in 2007 and it was due to some motherboard failure and only when on battery.

Sep 9, 2018 4:01 PM in response to ShadowMac77

Exact same kernel panic for me as well. It also happens when I use Chrome but I know that user applications cannot be the root cause of kernel panics. The bug is with the graphics driver (the panic dump reveals this). My guess is that Chrome is using a new feature that wasn't tested properly or the underlying driver has changed.

The fact that there is a feature called "Use hardware acceleration when available" screams to me that Chrome has surfaced a bug in the GPU driver. This is a potential security threat since clever software writers could abuse this bug.

Exact same issue here. Started end of July. Took it to a genius bar, they replaced the motherboard. Got it back a couple of weeks ago... and issue is back again!

Seems indeed related to some "heavy" usage of graphical card: happened to me when connecting to google meet, appear.in (both are video conf web services), or when looking at emails in Yahoo mail, on Chrome every time.

This occurs very frequently for me : several times a day... VERY annoying...

BTW, I too have have this "snowy" screen... Mincek83 mentioned that it might be related to mother board failure. If this is the case, I'd be very surprised. I would have broken two motherboards in 2 month time?

Some other 'leads' are related to USB ports usage. I see in the console the following error messages... Is this related?

*** MCA Error Report ***

CPU Machine Check Architecture Error Dump (CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7360U CPU @ 2.30GHz, CPUID: 0x806E9)

CATERR detected! No MCA data found.

Hi alonpr,

I had a Genius Bar appointment where I showed my crash report (identical to ShadowMac77's with affected GPUDriversIntel) and described the context. Unfortunately, they did not want to run a diagnostic because my MBP13 is within the return window. Instead they offered to simply exchange the laptop for a new one, and even extended my return period to 30 days so I can think about it. I know this isn't helpful for diagnosing the root cause of the issue, but wanted to give an update.

I decided to just buy a refurb MBP13 from the Apple website, return my existing laptop, and pocket the $300+ difference. Hope the problem doesn't recur on the refurb!

Sep 10, 2018 12:58 AM in response to ShadowMac77

The problem occurs in any browser on sites with a lot of advertising. Or maybe with some kind of advertising. A more detailed analysis was not conducted and it would be good if anything were done by the QA of the Apple, not by the customers.

The problem was reproduced for several months. It is unfortunate that Apple did not take care of its customers throughout this time. This is a huge step back in the quality of products from Apple 😠

Sep 10, 2018 3:33 PM in response to ShadowMac77

I just had the same crash happen. Our reports (at least the top half) are identical. It happened to me when I was plotting a course on Google Maps in Safari - so it doesn't seem to be restricted to Chrome. I hope Apple comes out with a new solution - I just got this 2017 MBP last March because my mid-2012 MBP had this exact same issue happening. It basically killed the computer... 😟

Sep 11, 2018 11:10 PM in response to vbartro

I can't believe how dumb Apple is. This is clearly a software driver bug since reports started coming in only a few months ago. We will be vindicated eventually when Apple fesses up and we see the fix in the patch notes. I can't believe they replaced the motherboard. All these crashes get reported to Apple (if you send it, which you should). A simple search will show...oh we shouldn't spend $500 replacing motherboards when we can fix the bug in 1 hour...
