Kernel Panic from GPU Driver High Sierra MacBook Pro 2017

Hi all,

For the last few days, I have been experiencing kernel panics which seem to be stemming from some graphics issue. I've tried searching around online and found some similar reports, but nothing that seems to help me solve the problem. I am thinking about taking it in to an Apple Store for advisement but I figured I would check online first. Below is the report. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but the first two times it occurred while watching videos, while the third time (which the report below is from) I don't recall watching anything though something may have been playing in the Chrome that I didn't notice. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Agreed, though not only browser's fault - but any resourceful process, like videogame or render. According to search - this problem occur since the beginning of July, and it is mass problem. Maybe not all of people who faced this didn't make a ticket in Apple customer service, me, for example, but I called Apple couple of times with no results, and didn't even find an email where I can send all this info. So I'm not surprised that not everyone approached support. And even if not - doesn't they have guys who monitor how widely spread the problem is? As no fixes were presented and the only "official" thing where I can report this - is forum with other customers, who doesn't really know the reason or solution to this. As far as I understand - apple support doesn't read this thread as well, so not sure why it even exists, as there's more info and participants on reddit)

Anyway - a bit disappointed in all that

I just had the same crash happen. Our reports (at least the top half) are identical. It happened to me when I was plotting a course on Google Maps in Safari - so it doesn't seem to be restricted to Chrome. I hope Apple comes out with a new solution - I just got this 2017 MBP last March because my mid-2012 MBP had this exact same issue happening. It basically killed the computer... 😟

Sep 11, 2018 2:04 AM in response to billtlee

I have already mentioned I had that problem too. What I did so far is:

- smc/nvram reset

- os reinstall

- entirely stopped using Chrome and Safari

- run the built-in diagnostics tools (nothing found)

I'm using Opera only for at least two weeks already and getting no screen freezes and kernel panics anymore.

I know it can be just a coincidence so will let you know if it comes back.

The only thing that I keep getting from time to time is when I open the lid then I get a "snowy" screen for a second or two.

I had that before on my Mac back in 2007 and it was due to some motherboard failure and only when on battery.

Sep 11, 2018 7:21 AM in response to mincek83

Exact same issue here. Started end of July. Took it to a genius bar, they replaced the motherboard. Got it back a couple of weeks ago... and issue is back again!

Seems indeed related to some "heavy" usage of graphical card: happened to me when connecting to google meet, appear.in (both are video conf web services), or when looking at emails in Yahoo mail, on Chrome every time.

This occurs very frequently for me : several times a day... VERY annoying...

BTW, I too have have this "snowy" screen... Mincek83 mentioned that it might be related to mother board failure. If this is the case, I'd be very surprised. I would have broken two motherboards in 2 month time?

Some other 'leads' are related to USB ports usage. I see in the console the following error messages... Is this related?

*** MCA Error Report ***

CPU Machine Check Architecture Error Dump (CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7360U CPU @ 2.30GHz, CPUID: 0x806E9)

CATERR detected! No MCA data found.

I can't believe how dumb Apple is. This is clearly a software driver bug since reports started coming in only a few months ago. We will be vindicated eventually when Apple fesses up and we see the fix in the patch notes. I can't believe they replaced the motherboard. All these crashes get reported to Apple (if you send it, which you should). A simple search will show...oh we shouldn't spend $500 replacing motherboards when we can fix the bug in 1 hour...

Sep 13, 2018 3:08 AM in response to AsherSea

Yes, I did send the crash reports multiple times. But no clue on whether they get sent for an actual analysis or whether they only get lost...

I was thinking that maybe the problem comes from some kind of incompatibility between macOS and some extra software. If it only came from macOS, everybody would be experiencing it, right?

It may be good for all those who participated in this thread to send out their installed apps. Not sure how to easily get this list, though?

Oct 24, 2018 1:00 AM in response to AsherSea

Had very similar problems again end of last week. MBP would not even start up at all!!! Got apple support on line, they asked me to send it for repair again. I tried to explain to them that repairing is not a good option anymore, and that I'd like a full replacement for the machine. They refused, took it for repair again... and replaced the motherboard AGAIN! 2 faulty motherboards in less than 2 months, am I that unlucky? Or are apple products so bad, despite their huge price?

They assured me this was a different issue. This time, it was a memory card issue... will see...

Nov 26, 2018 9:59 PM in response to ShadowMac77

I'm experiencing the same error occurring randomly, while the machine is idle and I'm not doing anything with it. After it happened the first time I've formatted the SSD and made a clean installation of Mojave from an USB Drive but it happened again, in the same situation as before. There are no useful information about the error online and I don't even know if it's hardware or software related.

The only thing opened was Google Chrome with a few tabs, no high resource consumption. I've also tried to stress the machine but it didn't fail that way.

Were you able to fix the issue? If so, what did you do?

What could I try now before taking it to service? In my country we don't have Genius Bar and I don't know if the guarantee will be useful.

Thanks in advance, any help will be appreciated.

Hello,

I got my MBP back last week. Unfortunately, no changes... still having random crashes.

In summary:

- the changed the mother board. Still crashes, but the crash cause seem to have changed, though. It was then crashing because of 'thunderbolt power on failure'.

- sent it back for repair. They changed the mother board AGAIN. No change, still random crashes.

- brought it back to repair, they were about to change the screen when Apple sent the SSD firmware update. So they installed the new firmware, but did not change the screen. They said they did not experience the crashes again.

- I re installed my latest backup... and started to work from there. random crashes again!

- I re-installed mac OS, I upgraded to Mojave... still random crashes. Often, it crashes while in sleep mode, lid closed, during the night.

Four possible culprits here :

- yet another hardware issue, related to thunderbolt port. I imagine the thunderbolt ports are directly on the mother board, so I may need a fourth motherboard?

- my usb/ethernet/vga/hdmi <-> usb-c adapter, which would maybe induce some strange power pikes/hicups? Strangely enough, I use it on another MBP (excat same model as mine) and I have absolutely no issue.

- my headsets? The very first time it crashed was when I removed headsets from the jack plug...

- software related : I have Xcode installed. Re installation of Xcode and upgrades of Xcode always take forever and sometimes even fail, they freeze my MBP and I have to do a hard reboot... Something to investigate?
