Calendar dots on every day, but no event

My wife's iPhone's (7 Plus, v.11.4.1) calendar, in month view, shows dots for every day, from July 27, 2018 through June 22, 2020. From list view, on July 27, there is a phantom event, titled New Event, with a start time of 10:00AM and end time of 10:00AM. This event does not show in day view; only in list view. Then, on July 28, 2018, this same New Event (same start/end times) shows twice in list view (not present in day view). Then, July 29, 2018, this same New Event (same start/end times) shows three times. This repeats itself until the same phantom event shows five times in list view every day; but not in day view. It continues to show the phantom 10 AM to 10 AM New Event five times, every day, through June 22, 2020.

I cannot delete the event. Attempting to do so crashes the calendar. Upon opening the calendar, the offending event remains. I cannot edit the event in any way (say, by changing something, like the title or end time) because clicking Done crashes the calendar. I've also tried adding a new, useless calendar so that I can move the phantom event to it and then uncheck View of that dummy calendar. Just trying to reassign the phantom event to the dummy calendar crashes the calendar.

I've tried rebooting the phone and editing. Same deal.

I'm thinking of restoring to factory defaults and then restoring from backup. But, wouldn't this just restore the problem?

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks.

Joseph, thank you for your quick -- and correct -- response!

For anyone else with this same issue, please know that deleting and reinstalling the calendar, by itself, did not work, initially. But, with the second attempt, I deleted the iCal app again. Then, before installing the new iCal app, I also deleted the email account associated with the offending calendar. I then downloaded and installed iCal, and only then did I re-add the email account. I panicked a bit for a couple minutes as the accounts and calendar initialized. But, after about three-minutes, both email, notes, and calendar items reappeared, minus the erroneous calendar events.

Greetings RealToast,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! I understand your wife has an event which is unable to be removed from the Calendar app on her iPhone. Additionally, this event repeats, and the Calendar app quits unexpectedly when you attempt to delete the event.

Since restoring a backup may restore the behavior you're experiencing, I first suggest attempting to delete the Calendar app from the iPhone, download it again from the App Store, and then see if that helps to allow you to delete the event as normal. You can see those steps from the following guide: Delete built-in Apple apps on your iOS 11 device or Apple Watch

If the issue persists, let's have you view which account the calendar event is associated with, and either unsubscribe and resubscribe to that calendar, or disable and then enable that account within the iPhone settings, and test the behavior.

To view the account the event is associated with: tap the event within the calendar. From there, you should see a Calendar section which will either allow you to tap the name of the calendar to display the account information, or you could then then tap the Calendars tab after opening Calendar to view the corresponding account.

After locating which account the event is associated with, let's have you then disable the Calendar feature from that account, by tapping Settings > Accounts & Passwords, tap the account, and disable Calendars. You could then re-enable Calendars and test the behavior.

You can see how to unsubscribe to Calendars from the following guide: Use iCloud calendar subscriptions

Unsubscribe from a calendar subscription

On iOS, open Calendar. Tap Calendars > User uploaded file > Delete Calendar.

Let me know how the provided suggestions work for you.

Kind regards.
