Apple Watch2 crown repair costs reasonable?

Apple Watch2 crown stop functioning. It is clean, rotates, clicks and had had normal wear and tear. No response on either click or rotate. All recommended reboots and resets have been made - repair was quoted at $229. Is this reasonable?

Whether you think it is reasonable or not is at best academic. Apple publishes their out of warranty service fees Apple Watch Service Pricing - Apple Support and that’s the going rate. In almost every service case the repair is actually a service exchange watch, so for the price you get either a new or fully refurbished watch.

Customers shouldn’t be treated on an “academic”, in-the-small-print basis - especially in a new competitive market on a product that has not been long-term tested and where Apple is trying to establish brand loyalty. No one even checked or tested the watch, or showed interest in exactly what may have happened. Yes, electronics fail, but the bigger picture is that Apple would benefit and profit far more by providing me a with more reasonable lower cost option. Loyalty has its cost.

Since Apple got into small electronics with the iPod they have never done diagnosis/parts replacement of units as this is not cost effective to them and many times the consumer. If you want to have just the digital crown replaced you will need to find a 3rd party repair site that can work on it (there aren't many that will even attempt it). iFixit gives the Watch a very low score on repairability due to the microelectronics and sealing involved. So all Apple offers in the way of repairs is providing you a service replacement unit for a set fee.

They seem to be doing relatively well financially with this approach.
