Apple Mail on the MAC does not keep iCloud IMAP account in sync

This problem continues to occur. The only thing that seems to temporarily resolve it is to select the "Mailbox"->"Rebuild" menu item, then quit mail before the rebuild is able to complete. When I reopen mail, the correct messages seem to be loaded. If I don't quit before the rebuild is complete, the same incorrect (previously deleted) messages get loaded as if they were new. It seems that once I have deleted any messages, I need to open mail either via iCloud.com or on one of my other devices to verify that I am actually looking at a new message rather than a previously deleted on my MacBook Pro.

Yes, I have tried deleting the account and re-adding it. It works for a while, then the problem starts happening again. Anything I have done seems to be only a temporary fix.

As for Reindexing, what does Spotlight have to do with reading mail using the Mail app? I am not "searching", but just opening my inbox to see new messages, but my previously deleted messages reappear instead of the new messages.

Thanks for this suggestion. Since I used "Rebuild" again, and the mailbox seems to be back for now, I will wait until the problem recurs again before trying to move those files out of ~/Library/Mail/...

The "Rebuild" did not work, so I have removed those ~/Library/Mail/... files and am waiting to see if the problem occurs again after Mail reloads everything. It is reloading mail for all of my accounts, not just iCloud.

Unfortunately, Mail on the Mac is already back to showing me recently deleted messages for my iCloud account instead of the new messages. I still have to go to my iPhone or iPad to see new messages. This only seems to happen for the iCloud IMAP mail, an not for any of the other IMAP mailboxes I have.

Preferences/Viewing has Move discarded messages to Trash (not Archive).

For iCloud, I have several times switched between the IMAP "Deleted Messages" folder and "none" to see it this made a difference. It did not. I currently have it set a "none" so that messages get marked deleted, and I use "View->Show Deleted Messages" whenever I open mail so that I see which messages have been marked deleted, but not yet erased from the inbox. I always manually decide when to "Erase Deleted Items", and watch them get removed from the inbox. When I "Erase Deleted Items", I observed on my iPad and iPhone that the messages do get deleted from the IMAP inbox.
