How to add Trash to sidebar

How do I add the Trash folder to the Sidebar in High Sierra? While I have used instructions for other OS and do get a trash folder in the Sidebar, the icon is only a "folder" with a "?" next to it. How do I get an icon of the Trash can with "Trash" next to it?

macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

the icon is only a "folder" with a "?" next to it

note: You can control click on that question mark folder> Remove from sidebar; and try again (below)

Easy enough to do.

From your home folder in Finder, press the three keys shift command period(.)

This will show the hidden folders including the ./Trash

Here you can drag the Trash folder to the sidebar.

Pressing that key combination will re hide hidden folders

Thank you for your continuing help!

Took the following steps:

  • Removed icon with ? mark from Sidebar
  • Confirmed that I am using the Home folder by using Go - Home folder (even though Sidebar already showed my Home folder)(and I didn’t drill down from the other places)
  • Pressed “shift command .” and saw the hidden “Trash” folder:

  • Dragged that folder to the Sidebar
  • Immediately got the “document icon” and “?” mark

Pressing “shift command .” only re-hid the hidden files and didn’t change the icon in the Sidebar

Any other ideas? I am so appreciative!

You can drag anything into the sidebar.

You are not in your Favorites>home user folder. Do not drill down, Not the Macintosh HD, not the MacBook Pro

But your folder with your name in the side bar, with the icon of a house.

If you do not see your Home folder in the Sidebar, add it via Finder>Preferences>Sidebar

You can also get to your Home folder from Finder>GO>Home
