Several RAW files missing in SD card folder on Mac but showing on camera

Hey all,

I'm so confused, please help... I have a Sony A7iii with two memory card holder slots which record RAW and JPEG. On my camera all the photographs I've taken today are showing as being there. However when I connect my SD card to my MacBook Pro using a card reader and open the "untitled" card folder over half of the files are missing. This is the same when I insert either memory card into my Mac. I then opened the "photos" app on my Mac and it appears that all of the photos are showing up here, however it won't let me import the RAW files only the JPEGs. Does anyone know why some of the files wouldn't be showing up when I open the SD memory card "untitled" folder? I've tried to unhide folders but this didn't seem to work. This has never happened before and I just can't get my head around what's going on.

Please help! 🙂

Hello, thanks for your reply.

Yes that's correct, some of the images are showing up but around 180 others are missing when I view the SD card folder on my Mac. I can however see all of them when I look in my "photos" application (but I think these will be JPEG not RAW files?).

I can't see the Sony A7iii on the list in the link you sent, so does this mean my Mac isn't compatible with my camera?

I'm using a card reader to link my Sandisk memory cards to my Mac so I'm not sure I fully understand what's happening or how to fix this issue.

Any advice appreciated

Thanks 🙂

As you are posting in the High Sierra community I am assuming your Mac is running High Sierra.

The Community specialist that responded to you earlier gave you a link to Digital Camera RAW formats supported in macOS Sierra, your camera is not supported in Sierra, but it is supported in High Sierra, Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra - Apple Support

Can you confirm if your Mac is on Sierra or High Sierra, click on the Apple top left and then select About This Mac.

Next up is do you format your SD cards before you use them. It is very important to format your memory cards in the camera before you use them when they are new or after you have wiped the card, formatting the card places the cameras file system on the card making image retrieval easier, formatting is done via the menu system on the camera.

Can you see your raw images if you connect the camera to your Mac via a cable and open Image Capture. Does the cameras own Sony software see the raw images when launched on your Mac.

Hello, yes my Mac is running High Sierra, and yes I have formatted both memory cards in my camera before.

I've just connected my camera directly to my Mac and I have indeed found all of the photos (including the missing ones) in the "Image Capture" app, but they still don't show if I just click on the memory card folder. Do you know what the problem is and how I prevent this happening in future? I'm about to shoot a wedding soon, and could do without a repeat of this happening. Thanks so much for your help 🙂
