I'm new to app dev and are currently trying to learn iOS development on my current MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015, 1.1ghz). I was thinking of buying a Macbook Pro from 2012 with 8 gigs and 2.5ghz, 13-inch. Can anyone helps telling me if this is a good option?

Do not buy a 2012 machine. It would be noticeably slower than you 2015 machine.

Well the 2012 are great machines, the last of the user upgradable. I have one myself.
Mojave may be the last macOS that will run on the 2012's.
Capable yes but you have to weight it out. I think it is important to not get too far behind in the hardware and software.

Yeah, Im reconsidering not to buy an 2012 machine.
It would obviously be very slow with the default 5400 rpm drive, but that can be fixed easily by installing an SSD.
I have a refurb mid 2012 with an SSD and plenty of RAM (upgraded right after I got it last year) - it is as snappy as can be (and covered by Applecare until early 2020).
