macbook pro 13" 2018 random freeze

I got my 2018 macbook pro 13" three weeks ago. The computer freeze at least twice. It requires hard reboot. Where should I start to look for fault? The system isn't under heavy load nor was it hot.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, 4 TBT3), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

Hi!

What version of macOS are you running? There were 2 supplemental updates released, specifically for 2018 MacBook Pros. The 2nd supplemental update helped my 15" 2018 MBP a ton.

You can check by opening System Preferences, then Software Update. Make sure there are no updates available.

Hope this helps,
Richard

Those of you are asking now..... have you all upgraded to Mojave. Please mention in your posts.

I had this freezing problem at least twice a day from the day i bought the computer last July until about a month ago. I worked with tech support and even was referred to high level support. Upgrading to Mojave completely cured the problem. It was a “kernel issue”. I have not had a freeze in about 4 weeks.... so please try upgrading .....

Hi,

Apple support have come back to me. They say they can’t find any hardware issue in the log dumps from my machine. I have to wipe and reinstall again using the internet recovery option which resets the firmware etc. I am going to try this and see what happens but I am almost certain the problem will reappear. I will follow up here with any outcomes

Thanks,

James

Anyone had this issue while having their headphone jack plugged in?

In addressing @becky_s22 (Apple specialist) remark, I noticed no one has brought this up, and it is to my understanding that the new T2 chip is controlling the audio as well. Perhaps this could potentially be the reason? Because mine froze in bare condition (with the exception of headphone jack plugged in and original charger plugged in).

Update: this seems to be a highly probable root cause as I see a lot of reports mentioning media playback (VLC, Amazon Music, Spotify, etc), and many tried troubleshooting by switching software and failed.

Hello,

I asked my friends, who research Apple UEFI firmware, and they suggest that it is not impossible that the issue is caused by failing to do EPID provisioning during last firmware upgrade. To check this claim one could request AppleMeDriverDxe to redo the provisioning by resetting epid_provisioned flag.

Necessary to run the following commands (with System Integrity Protection disabled):

sudo nvram 8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c:epid_provisioned=%00%00%00%00

sudo nvram 8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c:fpf_provisioned=%00%00%00%00

I mentioned my solution a few weeks ago and it still works. Every single time my MacBook Pro 2018 freezes and I have to hard-reboot, it's because I was using the touchpad swiping with two fingers when a THIRD LAZY FINGER brushed the touchpad. It got so bad before it was freezing up to several times a day. The moment as I figured out the problem it went away. Because I trained my lazy third finger not to touch the touchpad. Occasionally I forget but it's very rare now. It just does NOT freeze unless I have a third finger brushing the touchpad while swiping with two fingers. Hope this helps you and I hope you get de-stressed!!

Exact same problem, getting a crash every 2-3 days or so on my 3 weeks old MBP 13"/16GB/256/.

Sometimes it's not the freeze, it's something different: upon opening the lid, i get a completely garbled up screen (super pixelated, greenish/grayish hue) where i can only see the mouse moving, nothing else can be observed; the mouse arrow itself is just a huge pixel, about 1 x 1 cm on screen. Shutting down is the only thing that helps.

For the freeze yesterday i managed to copy the error report: it's all about Bridge OS! See below:

{"caused_by":"macos","macos_system_state":"running","bug_type":"210","os_version ":"Bridge OS 2.4.1 (15P6805)","timestamp":"2018-09-20 14:22:40.80 +0000","incident_id":"A38855BC-160F-4170-946B-CC144FA47BDF"}

I've experienced the same problem, my 15 inch MPB froze twice yesterday. I was simply browsing on Chrome and listening to music on iTunes. Many people in this thread mentioned their use of Chrome, could this be a chrome compatibility problem? I've been using safari today, and no issue so far. It's quite scary as this laptop is my daily driver. Don't trust Apple that much now.

Like I’ve mentioned multiple times in this thread, upgrading to the latest beta release for Mojave solved it for me. It hasn’t crashed for a month or so since then. Not that I recommend anyone to upgrade to a beta but imo you can look forward to a fix once the next stable Mojave update is pushed out late this year.

Prior to the update, I was crashing around once every two days at least.

I am using Version 10.14.1 Beta (18B67a).

For the record, I have no idea why it got fixed. The reason why I tried the beta in the first place is because I saw a post somewhere on MacRumours that claims that the Beta came with an update for the BridgeOS Firmware, which I knew was at least partially responsible for the freezes based on my own research on this topic. No idea if the post was valid or what and don't have the time to look for it now. There was no sources cited either.

But for what it is worth, it worked for me and I haven't been haven't issues since. Install at your own risk of course.
