macbook pro 13" 2018 random freeze

I got my 2018 macbook pro 13" three weeks ago. The computer freeze at least twice. It requires hard reboot. Where should I start to look for fault? The system isn't under heavy load nor was it hot.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, 4 TBT3), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

Hi!

What version of macOS are you running? There were 2 supplemental updates released, specifically for 2018 MacBook Pros. The 2nd supplemental update helped my 15" 2018 MBP a ton.

You can check by opening System Preferences, then Software Update. Make sure there are no updates available.

Hope this helps,
Richard

I took my machine back to the Apple shop where I purchased it from (which was for the second time); and without any fuss they were happy to either try and work out what was going on, or to give a full refund. I was armed with the Consumer Rights Act 2015, but I didn't need it. They were very helpful and I opted for the refund. These new machines have the new T2 chip, and I think a possible line of enquiry was whether that was giving rise to the issue. I will probably re purchase a machine in about 6 months when this new technology has settled in.

So I am having the exact same problem... my screen shots are showing the same "Caused by...." i tried to copy it and paste it here but to no avail. The techs at Apple called it a "kernel" problem. I have no idea what that is but they do not seem to know how to fix it! All I know is that the last Apple support IO talked to, who is supposed to be a high level support, told me that there would be an up date soon and that I should wait and try that..... That was 2 weeks ago and so far there has not been an update. Considering this is Apple support, you would think that someone would be monitoring our conversations and offer us a bit of help!

Add me to the long list of users who've experienced this issue.

Screen freezes completely, trackpad loses all sort of responsiveness, only thing to do is to hard reboot.

The first time it happened I was just browsing in chrome.

And it happened about 3 more times, all of them watching youtube videos (fullscreen and non) in chrome.

There seems to be a pattern here...from the comments I've seen it's almost always when a browser is open and most of the time is performing some sort of gpu work (like videos)... but the fact that the 'crash' completely disables and 'turns off' the trackpad, I'm thinking this is not just a issue at the application level. It's probably some really low level kernel issue that has either to do with the gpu or as some have commented, with the t2 chip.

So basically, it's not sure if this is gonna be solvable, but IT'S BAD.

Anyways, I'm about to install Mojave right now, I hope they did some magic.

How again Everyone,

I just heard back from the gal at Tech support that I have been dealing with over these numerous weeks. She had sent my data to the engineering department. they got back to her that the freezes and ramping up of the fan was due to overuse by Parallels and Bitdefender.

Now note, I bought the top of line 13".... 16 gb ram, 2Tb drive. It is supposed to be strong enough for gaming.... I do not do gaming. I surf the web, check my e-mail, and use Parallels and Windows to do some writing and spreadsheets and access in Office plus a genealogy program. Everything else is done on the Mac side. I don't feel I am using more power than this machine can handle... in fact, I feel I am not suing much power at all. Even if my Parallels is not being used and I am on the Mac side, the machine still froze. The ramping occurred even if the machine was supposedly in sleep mode!

As for Bitdefender, I have it on both my Mac and Windows side and for those who think that it is not necessary on the Mac side..... two weeks ago it stopped a trojan Horse from attacking the Mac side of the machine through Safari!!!

So for those who are suffering these random freezes.... are you using Bitdefender or Parallels? Tech support would like me to remove both and see if it improves.... but I am no longer game. I have spent way too much time helping Apple solve this mystery and plan on asking for my money back if Mojave does not do the trick. (So far I have not had a freeze in the 2 hours since installation!!). I have been working with Apple since August 1st.....5 days after i received this machine. It has not worked right since then!

Best,

Helen

Hi guys, I went to the Apple Store in Amsterdam today and explained everything, including someone here saying that the crash log said something about Bridge OS. The guy at the Genius Bar was really helpful and thought maybe the T2 chip (which runs on Bridge OS) could be wrongly configured in the factory.

Anyhow, they took my laptop in and had them send me the videos of the MBP crashing. They’re gonna run tests on it for now

Yes, good tip. I will upgrade ASAP.

Looking at the panic log it seems it could be something related to the T2 live I've read in other post/sites:

{"caused_by":"macos","macos_system_state":"running","bug_type":"210","os_version ":"Bridge OS 2.4.1 (15P6805)","timestamp":"2018-10-10 19:48:42.36 +0000","incident_id":"B4B4369C-10CC-4C98-825E-42A35E274C1F"}

{

"build" : "Bridge OS 2.4.1 (15P6805)",

"product" : "iBridge2,4",

"kernel" : "Darwin Kernel Version 17.7.0: Fri Jul 6 19:25:51 PDT 2018; root:xnu-4570.71.3~1\/RELEASE_ARM64_T8010",

Anyway, whether it's something related to hardware or software, it's a little bit disappointing that there is no official statement (to say nothing of an official solution) about a huge problem impacting the flagship machine.

The majority of us choose this box for work so the damage is double in this case.

Trust me, after many years this is the first time I feel a little distrusted.

I have also experienced the same issue twice in two days, once right before the upgrade to High Sierra 10.13.6 Supplemental Update 2, and once right after (this morning). I own a MBP13 2018 (bought two weeks ago).

In the first case I was just watching a "mkv" file on VLC; in the second case I was using Google Maps in Chrome. In both situations I had to turn off the laptop by keeping the power up/off button for 4 seconds.

I have a fairly new system with not so many applications installed (and in both situations I wasn't running anything in the background). My previous laptop (a 2011 Macbook Pro 15") was operating in a way heavier (and sustained) stress and never gave me a single issue.

I have the same issue too, my Macbook Pro 13" with Touchbar froze three times and I've just bought it ten days ago. First two times it freezed when I was watching an MKV file on VLC, so I changed from VLC to MPV and it didn't freeze for a few days. Then just today, it froze while I had FL Studio, Chrome and Spotify open.

My laptop is on the newest update and the only way to get out of the frozen screen is a cold reboot with the power button.

Do you guys think its a software issue or is it just an issue on the new Macbooks?
