macbook pro 13" 2018 random freeze

I got my 2018 macbook pro 13" three weeks ago. The computer freeze at least twice. It requires hard reboot. Where should I start to look for fault? The system isn't under heavy load nor was it hot.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, 4 TBT3), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

Hi!

What version of macOS are you running? There were 2 supplemental updates released, specifically for 2018 MacBook Pros. The 2nd supplemental update helped my 15" 2018 MBP a ton.

You can check by opening System Preferences, then Software Update. Make sure there are no updates available.

Hope this helps,
Richard

To add one more to the list. 2 weeks old Macbook Pro 13 with 512GB, 16 RAM. Froze twice, took it to the Apple store, and they said hardware is fine and is a software related problem that they couldn't diagnose. They told me to get in touch with the store I bought it from to request an exchange. Funny thing is that they said they couldn't replace it since it was bought from an Apple store... what's the famous Apple warranty for then anyway?

Wow this seems like a manufacturing problem. I too am having similar issues. It's only 3 weeks old. 13" with i7 16GB 256GB. Freezes, random system reboots by itself at least 3 since purchase, screen glitching and the constant beach ball. I just did a fresh install of Mojave (which took forever because of that T2 security control but I did learn about Command-Option-R to install with latest OS at recovery). Nevertheless, Mac seems to be stable (only 2 days) so hoping it's a problem with the initial install at factory. Any of you having freezing/mouse stuttering issues with HTML5 video in Safari? My only workaround is to change the User Agent setting or use a different browser such as Chrome. Try playing a video from Digg.

Hi All,

Has anyone else updated to Mojave? Has it cured your freezing problems. I updated yesterday and so far there have been no technical freezes. I put machine to sleep last night and battey drained overnight so I had to reboot.... but am not sure the percentage of battery I had when i put it to sleep.... I did not think it was low...but am not sure.

does anyone else with this new Macbook 13" find the battery draining much too fast? I have also had the fan go on while the computer was asleep... this was before the upgrade.... so I am not sure if this is a cured problem too.

would love to hear about others who have upgraded and their results with the freezing issue.

Thanks,

Helen

Thanks for letting the group know! I also installed Mojave about 2 days ago. No more freezing and no more ramping of the fan..... but yesterday I ran into another glitch that I am sure is due to Mojave. All of a sudden my internet, which showed it was on, could not connect. I spent two hours with Tech and they could not get it working either. We ran diagnostics and tried EVERYTHING! Then I walked away for an appointment and when I came back, everything was working again....mail and Safari. I took the MacBook to another wi-if site and it worked fine there too and then worked again when I brought it home. And it is working this morning.

This glitch had nothing to do with the internet connection... iPads, phones and desktop, located next to the MacBook all had workable internet and the internet speed was quite strong.... so it was only this computer glitch.

Really, really, strange!

Best,

Helen

Following my other post...4 days later after a clean install of Mojave I have experienced my first reboot. It occurred just after the lid was opened after a night of sleep. Interestingly enough, there was no crash report message. However, looking into the logs, I see this

com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.sandboxd[9133]): Service exited due to SIGALRM | sent by kernel_task[0]

Also, looking at the timestamps of these messages, there is a lot of activity when the laptop is supposedly sleeping

Now I don't think this has anything to do with it but its interesting.

Hi @michaelyb01

I re-installed both. The first time I tried to transfer my old mac to the new one but it wouldn't work as I had to many software-extensions that I couldn't install because mac's security software wouldn't let me and I don't know the root pw. So after that I completely cleaned the disk and re-installed High-Sierra. The freezes appeared after that though! And I honestly cannot think of anything that would have make the freezes go away, but just for some kind of reason after two or three of them they did not happen again. Than I upgraded to Mojave, still no freezes and now just a couple of days ago I again completely killed my ssd and reinstalled Mojave, everything's good so far.

I hope this helps 😀 Mac-Techs: DO SOMETHING!

I think this may be a software problem. I have a 15" MacBook Pro from early 2011 running the latest High Sierra, and was having the same issues as the people here have described. Fan ramping up while doing nothing, even when the lid was closed, random freezes and restarts while doing the simplest tasks. Did a PRAM reset and a SMC reset by removing the battery, the issue still persists.

Having said that, I also have an iMac 5K from 2017 not experiencing any issue. Perhaps this is a problem unique to the MacBook Pro?

I also had a GPU/logic board issue a few years ago, back then they were kind enough to replace the board for me at no cost.

What I can tell you is this issue is different from the one I experienced before. When the GPU/logic board melted, there were initially graphics issue and eventually the laptop refused to boot up.

This time, I can boot up, but I was having difficulty signing in, often taking several restarts before I manage to get in. And after I get in, I would experience random freezes and restarts.

Hi,

Have you had apple diagnose it? I have the exact same problem and have gone through months of apple support. I have finally requested a replacement but they won’t do it as yet because they don’t acknowledge it is a fault related to the hardware because the machine passes all thier diagnostics. They keep insisting I rebuild, patch etc. Which I have done but I still have the issue. They also say to turn of disk encryption which will probably lessen the issue because it reduces the use of the arm processor, but that is a bad solution because it means I can’t use a key feature for me. Just hides the problem...

I have had the issue since it came out of the box but I missed my return window because Apple were diagnosing it and told me to wait for a patch.

Support are still trying to diagnose it, but it seems pretty clear to me to be a hardware fault. Probably a narrow edge case to do with the Touchbar / arm integration.

I am at my wits end because I can’t really use my very expensive Mac for a anything serious and I can’t afford to just go and buy a new computer either! I am really stuck!

Thanks,

James

Hi,

First time was within return policy, they told me to reinstall OS. Problem persisted and was now outside return policy.

It's in for repair, if they are unable to solve it after 2 attempts I have the possibility to annul the computer by Swedish law.

Unfortunately their Support in Sweden is very limited and have waiting periods that are unknown, I'd say they handle these issues poorly.
