Proxy Media not visible in FCPX browser or timeline

Hi Guys,

Has anyone had the problem of red warning modified files or black thumbnails in the browser and time line? The 4K clips that are .mov files are fine when original media view is selected but when switched to proxy view the clips are not available for edit.

The library is on the internal HD and the media files are on an external HD.

The files have not been modified by any application.

FCPX 10.4.3

Thanks for any suggestions.

Drew.

Hi Tom,

Don't know if you've given up on this (wouldn't blame you) but I've been trying to work out what is going wrong.

So what I did was:

1) Using Sony Catalyst Prepare I transcoded around 50 of the MXF files, that were originally imported by FCPX into one of the date folders in my media folder that resides on my external HD, into ProRes 4K.

So now there are the same clip names in a MXF and .MOV format in that date folder that lives in the Original Media folder that is on my media folder which corresponds to the Library I'm working in. (phew!)

2) I imported the 50 ProRes files into FCPX and left the files in place.

3) In the FCPX browser I transcoded the 50 original media clips into proxy media.

Here's what I discovered...

If I transcoded each original file in the browser individually, the proxy file gets placed in the correct and appropriate date of creation folder of the Final Cut Proxy Media folder on the external drive. It appears as {name}.mov and is a 1920x1080 file.

However, when I batch transcode (I tried it first with all fifty clips, then tried 10 and then 5 and then 3) they do not get placed in the Final Cut Proxy Media folder at all, instead they appear as those strange files in the root folder of the event folder on the external drive.

Have you any ideas why this is happening and is it a reason for the problems I am encountering, or is it something that the guys in the FCPX department of Apple need to look at?

I hope that you can help and I really appreciate your input.

It's not in the Library Bundle, it's the folder on my external drive that contains the sub folders Final Cut Optimised, Original and Proxy Media.

As I'm typing this, I'm watching this folder and it seems that as I'm transcoding the clips in the browser that are either blacked out or have the modified file warning, this list is increasing. I think they are proxy files but they aren't being placed in the Proxy media folder, rather in the root folder.User uploaded file

OK Tom,

Looks like this has beaten us.

This isn't my usual work flow either - normal for me is import from SD card and FCPX normally does a good job, but for some reason this time it hasn't transcoded correctly and placed some MXF files amongst the .MOV files and it seems to be these that are causing chaos!

It would seem like the App is still a little buggy, even after all this time but then I guess there needs to be problems in order to debug it.

Time to use ProRes Raw methinks?

All best.

Hi Tom,

Oh yes, I’m a hmmm, power user if that’s such a thing. Been with final cut since 7. Edited several documentaries using it.

I’ve reset preferences and even deleted and reinstalled FCPX.

I’ve copied the event to a new library but still no joy. Either black screen or red warning thumbnail stating modified file. I’ve not modified anything other than let FCPX import mxf files from sd cards shot on Sony.

Hi Tom,

I've deleted the contents of the Peak and Thumbnail folders and over a couple of days of monitoring the proxies seem to be maintaining their links, except for a few!

When I've revealed these stubborn clips in finder they all seem to be MXF files. This seems strange to me, as FCPX 10.4.3 appears to have imported into the original media folder, from SD cards used in a Sony camera or from a WD My Passport Wireless Pro, and converted most to .mov files but left some as MXF files. It seems to be these files that won't convert to proxy. Is this a reason for the problems I am encountering and if so do you know why they have imported and remained as a MXF file?

Thanks so much.
