It's not an overheating "problem" unless it gets so hot the thermal protection that is built in shuts off the phone. It will get warm in use; how warm is determined by what you are doing with it. Some contributing factors:

  • If you are charging it while using it the phone will get very warm
  • Extended use of cellular voice or data when the signal is weak will cause it to get quite hot
  • Playing games with video graphics will cause it to get hot
  • Having a bright screen will make it warmer
  • The camera uses a lot of energy, and the phone will get quite hot near the camera if you leave it on for a while. It will also drain the battery pretty fast.

Combinations of the above will aggravate the condition more.

I have an iPhone SE and an iPad model A1458. The devices get hot after a few minutes of use but the battery will last several hours while on internet, social media, solitaire or sudoku. Those types of apps are the most intensive apps I use.

This started at about the same time for both devices. It started happening sometime around April 2018. I've tried all of the standard recommended fixes.

The "too hot" notice never appears but eventually the keyboard stops working because the screen gets too hot to register my touch. Therefore I know this is an actual problem. It is actually getting too hot to work, even though the notice does not appear and it does not shut down. When I click the button to close an app, it has been my standard practice for years to double click, then swipe away the apps. If I'm switching between 2 apps, I may leave both open., but not usually. I've checked battery usage stats by application. I implemented every battery saving technique. I finally even removed my cases. Nothing has helped. How could this have suddenly happened to both devices in the April timeframe? What are my options for these two devices?

While it isn't causing the problem, there is no reason to ever close an app unless it is misbehaving. Closing apps can actually increase battery drain. My iPhone currently has over 100 apps in the quick launch window. Here is a collection of information on this subject:

What are the environmental conditions around you when using the devices? Room temperature (~68º F) or much warmer (or cooler). Are you charging the devices while using them?

If they were mine I would make a Genius Bar appointment and have them both checked out: Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple
