Safari back button does not go back to Google results

Scenario:

Safari tab open on some web page, call it page A. Decide I want to search for something else. Enter search terms in the url bar, press enter, and the google results page loads in the tab. Call the google results page B. Open one of the results in the tab. This new page is page C. Decide I don't like this result. Press back button. Am returned to page A instead of the actual previous page, page B the search results.

Why am I not returned to the actual previous page which was the google search results?

By the way I saw this conversation safari skips google search when i press previous page button and the accepted solution does not work (and even if it did, I wouldn't be happy with it).

The 'Search Results Snapback' option in the History dropdown menu is not visible when I am on page C. It is visible if I have already navigated back to page A from page C via the back button. However, if I press this option it does not take me to page B, the search results. It takes me forward again to page C.

I want to be clear on what I consider an acceptable solution: The back button should always return to whatever the previous page was. The suggested solution in the above linked conversation would not be acceptable to me even if it was available at page C and if it returned me to where I want to go (page B). The reason I don't find it acceptable is because, in the best case it is a 2-click solution. Even if it was a 1-click solution it would break my browser use pattern, in that I would need to remember not to use the back button to return to results.

So, my question is, how do I change Safari/Google so that the back button always always always returns to whatever the previous page was.

Many thanks 🙂

Appreciate the effort, but it doesn't work. The moment I navigate off the google results page, that page is removed from the history, so it does not display in the dropdown that appears on holding down the back button.

Even if it did work, this attempted solution is a work-around which would require modifying my behaviour, so it isn't the solution I am looking for.

I don't want this behaviour in a browser, I want to be able to remove it entirely from Safari, without having to come to terms with it.
