How to set up Macrium (WinPE) within Bootcamp on Macbook Pro 2018

Hi,

I've managed to install Windows 10 (without using BCA) and OSX High Sierra side by side.

I have both FileVault and Bitlocker enabled and can boot into both OS fine.

When initially installing Windows 10 via USB, I had to place the Bootcamp drivers (specifically AppleSSD) so that Win Install could see the internal drive.

Now Ive set up a Macrium Reflect installation within Windows which works fine to create backups from within windows.

However, for restores I need a Win PE USB and that's where Im struggling. The Win PE usb loads fine but within the Application I cant see any of the partitions/drive (probably because of missing Storage Driver).

When setting it up, I did get a warning about the Apple Solid State Drive Device not having a driver. I tried pointing it at the bootcamp drivers folder but it failed to find the AppleSSD.sys file and came up with a message saying "No Drivers were Found. Please try a different Folder.":

User uploaded file

Is there any way I can get the WinPE image to see the drives/partitions?

Need this as Im struggling to find an alternative backup strategy for bitlocker encrypted Windows.

A 2018 Mac should not be using or needing AppleSSD.sys and should be installed without a USB Installer. Is there a specific reason to use the USB?

Your USB Installer should already have a WinPE. Are you using a separate and different USB for restores?

Your 2018 Mac should have a NVMe SSD. Can you check in About This Mac -> System Report? AppleSSD.sys is a SCSI driver.

Can you use the standard Windows Backup/Restore method instead of Macrium? There are other backup tools For Windows on a Mac, which work much better.

Unless you use an Enterprise-level tool, in Consumer space, there are not many tools which can do scheduled backups, but a Powershell script can be used to initiate Windows backups. Restoring Windows backups on Macs is tricky, in most cases due to an invalid assumption that there are no other OSes/partitions on the drive.

There are also Cloud backup tools, but they depend on a client installed on the Windows installation which can contact the server and initiate a backup.

Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated.

Ive stuck with Macrium, it works perfectly in dual boot scenario and has a built in PE loader on windows even with bitlocker encryption (so I dont need a USB stick for restores). Ive tried making backups of EFI, reserved and win partitions and it restores them perfectly without breaking osx so thats good news. Obvious downside is I have to log into bootcamp for the schedules to kick off but I am fine with that.

On the OSX side Im using Time machine and plan to investigate CCC as well.

Thanks for the reply.

Apologies it was a daft error on my part. In Macrium PE, the Backup tab doesnt show the partition breakdowns, only the Restore Tab! Because I couldnt see the drives when installing Windows I mistakenly assumed it was the same issue.

I used a Win USB as I wanted to create a third NTFS Data partition.

For Macrium, they have their own PE tool for restores. As mentioned above, that works fine now.
