4K ATV Audio Output to AV Receiver

I have upgraded from Gen 3 to 4K ATV.

I have an Onkyo TX-SR576 AV receiver. It is circa 2008 and has what is possibly first generation HDMI switching.

My Gen 3 ATV was configured with HDMI direct to TV and audio via Toslink cable to the AV receiver. In this configuration, the receiver automatically switched to whatever audio code was presented to it (stereo or DTS etc).

With my 4K not having Toslink capability, I initially connected the HDMI cable to the HDMI switching on the receiver, however this proved unreliable with lines across the TV screen (like an interference) and then the receiver simply not carrying out the switching at all (blank TV screen - no ATV input at all). I have assumed the HDMI switching in the receiver is faulty after much switching of cables and ports.

My Panasonic TV has Toslink audio output so I have reconfigured with HDMI from ATV direct to TV then Toslink from TV to AV receiver. This, so far is working fine except the receiver is no longer auto-switching to the audio being output from the ATV. I have checked the settings in the receiver which is correctly set to automatically select a listening mode corresponding to the audio input received.

Is there an audio setting on the 4K I'm missing? Or will the 4K upgrade mean a new AV receiver?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

HDMI switching

The manual for your model receiver only talks about Component Video Switching. I’m not 100% sure what you mean by ‘HDMI switching’.

This is concerning, as it should just work. No setting can fix broken hardware. A digital signal shouldn’t have anything like analog interference.

This should also work, but the receiver would only know about getting audio from the TV, not what other device is connected to the TV.

To have the receiver (or TV) automatically select to the wanted HDMI port, you may have to activate HDMI-CEC on the Apple TV, if it wasn’t already. Settings﹥Remotes and Devices﹥Control TVs and Receivers﹥On|Off.

To mimic your old situation, with a direct audio connection over Toslink, you could buy a HDMI Audio Splitter, which could provide an external optical audio connection socket. I would prefer HDMI all the way, but it is a possibility.
