How to unpair &/or delete data from rental car?

If have used iPhone in rental car--with or without using Carplay, how does one "unpair the device and delete personal data" from the rental car infotainment system as advised? I plan to use mainly maps and listen to lectures on the phone--will not be using the telephone or text messaging through the car system. iPhone 6s+; IOS 11.4.1

Depends entirely on the car. Each car head unit is different. You would need to consult the car's owner's manual to find out how to unpair, and delete all downloaded data from the head unit in car.

There is nothing you can do from the iPhone itself.

Do note, that in general downloaded data to the head unit is not kept in the head unit itself once the car is turned off. But for more specifics you will need to check the media center's manual for the car in question.

Thanks, tho not clear how to do that. This was prompted by rental agency, guess they don’t want final buyer to see list of previous users. Not happy about that either.

Not clear how to do what?

Check the car's manual? It standard for car rentals to keep the car's owner's manual in the glove compartment of the car.

But as said, in general downloaded data such as contacts does not get saved onto the head unit. Once the car is turned off the data is deleted, and redownloaded the next time the car is turned on and the phone is connected to it. Only thing left to do is to Forget the paired iPhone before returning the car, and again that will depend on each car.

An easy way to find out how to forget devices is to search in Google or your search engine of choice for the make and model of the rental car and the words "forget paired device". That should produce relevant results.
