stop imovie update on macbook

I didn't start an update on iMovie on my MacBook, but apparently it did so automatically. I'm now trying to open iMovie and get the message: "You can’t open the application “iMovie” because it is being updated." I've restarted, tried to force quit (but it doesn't show as open), and looked at app updates (says everything is up to date). Any suggestions on how to either stop the update or open iMovie?

MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2014), iOS 10.3.3, Actually, it's iOS 10.13.6

Don't know if this will work, but you could try dragging the iMovie icon from the applications folder to the trash, but do not empty the trash. Then see if you can re-download iMovie from the online app store. If a download is not available or doesn't work, you can drag your old iMovie out of the trash and put it back into the applications folder.
