Add another phone number to iMessage on MacBook

I've recently got a French SIM card while I'm on my year abroad in France, which is now active on my iPhone. When my mac asked me if I wanted to sync up this number to my iMessage on my computer, I accidentally pressed no, and I can't find a way of linking them up again....this means I'm no longer receiving any messages on my computer and it's super annoying. My FaceTime on my mac however IS linked up to this phone number!!

My preferences say I can be reached at my email address, but only give me an option to add another email address, not another phone number. Any ideas? Ideally I just need that original dialogue box to pop up again and ask if I want to link the phone number.

Thanks in advance!

Hello madcan0,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that you're encountering an issue setting up the phone number of your iPhone for use in Messages on your Mac. You've come to the right place for help.

Let's start by checking that both the iPhone and Mac have been set up to use Continuity as follows:

Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support

Specifically, follow the steps in this section:

Set up SMS and MMS messaging

Use this feature with any Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that meets the Continuity system requirements. Make sure that your devices are set up as follows:

  • Each device is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID.
  • On iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Make sure that the Apple ID at the top of the screen is the same Apple ID that you're using for iMessage on your other devices. Add a check to your phone number and email address, so that you can be reached by iMessage at both. Do the same on your iPad or iPod touch.
  • On iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding, then choose which devices to allow to send and receive text messages from this iPhone. If you're not using two-factor authentication for your Apple ID, a verification code appears on each of your other devices: enter that code on your iPhone.
  • On Mac, open Messages, then choose Messages > Preferences. Click Accounts, then select your iMessage account. Make sure that the Apple ID shown here is the same Apple ID that you're using on your other devices. Add a check to your phone number and email address.

If the phone number does not appear for use in Messages on the Mac after trying those steps, sign out of your iMessage account next. You can do that in Messages by selecting Messages > Preferences > Accounts, select your iMessage account. Sign out, then sign back in to your iMessage account. Let us know what happens from here.

Cheers!
