Problem with Downloading Audiobooks

I have been downloading audiobooks to iTunes for years. After inserting a disk, I go to file, hit select all. Then I click on the Tools icon on the right of the screen and hit "Join CD Tracks." Then I submit the CD Track names and then import the CD. But all of a sudden, the option to "Join CD Tracks" is not available under the Tools icon.

Can anyone tell me how to get the "Join CD Tracks" option back under the tools icon? Without this option, the CDs take up too much space in iTunes and on my iPod.

Thanks.

The Join CD tracks option only appears if the CD is sorted on the left-most column of numbers in ascending order and two or more consecutive tracks are selected.

Note it must actually be that left column, not track number or album by artist, or another column which could give the same order, but not enable the option.

See Audiobooks on iPods for further advice.

By the way there won't be that much difference between the space used by one large file or multiple smaller ones. The same audio data needs to be stored somewhere either way.
