MacBook Pro 15" (2018) Keyboard "t" key repeating issue?

I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" (2018) last week and have been absolutely loving the computer. As an academic, I do a ton of typing and have actually found the keyboard quite enjoyable to the touch.

Recently however I noticed a strange issue popping up infrequently where it feels like the "t" key on my keyboard will repeat when pressed. That means certain words "tthat normally dontt have multtiple" t's appear like so while typing. At first I thought maybe I was pressing the keys incorrectly, or subtly too quickly since I do type quite fast, which led me to testing out different key press pressures and angles. I find that if I slightly press the 't' key on its left side edges, or if I roll my finger over it, it will duplicate the tt issue.

I know this was one of the many keyboard issues that plague the 2017 MacBook Pro + TouchBar models but I thought surely this could not be the case with the newly updated 2018 models...I reached out to Apple Support which suggested I reset the SMC & NVRAM, but the problems persisted after this. Today, I used compressed air and noticed that while the t issue seemed to be resolved, it immediately resumed a short while after.

Do I have a faulty device? Will this need to be repaired or returned? Pretty unsure what to do since the issue becomes quickly annoying and adds considerable time to my writing and editing.

I am on my 5th 2018 13" MBP and all 5 have had this problem. Always starts about 1 week into using the computer and always starts with the 'e' key and then migrates to the 't, s, r' keys. I am at a total loss and don't know what to do. Apple seems to say that they haven't heard from anyone but me that this is happening with their 2018 keyboards, but here I am reading on this page that others are also having this issue.

Please Apple, let us know when this will be fixed.

Same issue here, for me it's mostly the "e" and "i" keys. And we'ree not alone, the "I have this question, too" button has more ethan 55k peoplee confirming they have the same issue. This is the first time eveer that I have buyer's remorse after buying an Apple product. I waited until the 3rd revision of the new MBP, and let myself be lured in by the reports about an added membrane. I hope I can sell this thing at a loss, and either get the enext gen MBP if they finally fix this issue, or I'll cave in and switch to Windows (which I hate, but I need a reliable keyboard). I heard good thinigs about the Surface laptop.

Note: All typos in this post due to key replication.

Same here, E and I mostly but my O is doing it too. It's actually so frustrating that I now consider the laptop as being unusable since I constantly have to correct almost everything I'm typing. I've copied all my stuff off and clean installed it and it's sat unused for a few days and will continue to sit unused until I have the time to get to an Apple store.

Unfortunately, I can't let myself be stuck with what's clearly a product with an inherent design flaw so I'm going to have to get it fixed and then sell it on. I don't want to go back to a Windows laptop but then I don't want to have to pay hundreds every few months to get a replacement keyboard once that thing is out of warranty. It's ridiculous.

Oddly enough when I contacted Apple support and asked if this was a "known issue" they replied "no". Like, WTF? There are Youtube movies about this. I cannot type an entire paragraph of text without have to go back and correct a few double typos.

The single biggest concern I had upgrading from my 2011 MBP to the 2018 model was all the talk of keybooard issues. And they are still struggling aparently. I have never understood why they can't roll back to the old keyboards. No one give a flying f*ck that it would increase the thickness of the laptop by a mm. We want stuff that works for 4000 bucks. Not fancy stuff that sometimes works.

Well, I'll add my voice to everyone here: a relatively difficult-to-find but vital little thread. This is most definitely a problem with the 2018 MBPs, including mine. It doesn't seem to be a "speck of dust" issue, because it's truly intermittent; I can fix one key only to have this happen on a completely different key, almost immediately. My "repeating e" became a "repeating a" once the "e" fixed itself, and right now it's working fine, but last night I was going insane with the repeats and mistypes. Turning off key repeat does help a little bit. But then you don't have key repeat. That's just ridiculous.

Why would we even bother taking these laptops in to be repaired and lose them for one to two weeks if we know that it is just going to happen again?

I actually wrote to this thread the other week, and something that I included got flagged by Apple and so my very gentle rant wasn't posted. I'm trying again, and reiterating that I haven't lost my love for Apple, I still feel that this computer is so much more pro than the other computers of a different make and model I tried out before I bought this one. I know I'm in the minority, but I really like the feel of these butterfly keys and love typing on them. But this is a problem. It's a big problem, and I think that for the majority of people voicing their woes here are more heartbroken than angry. We don't want to lose our faith in a company that we still feel is the best computing experience out there.

Adding myself to the list. My problem is with the "e" key (for now). Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it duplicates. VERY frustrating on a $2800+ device (2018 15" MBP). It goes without saying that a working keyboard is critical to a functioning laptop computer.

I have Applecare. Will the store replace the computer on the spot or ship it away? I can't be without it for any length of time.

I have absolutely the same issue, the MacBook Pro from last quarter of 2018, top-spec, the letter 't' is double-typed frequently. It started happening after a couple of weeks of normal usage. I'm using the laptop for programming, so I type a lot and double-typing of 't' just drives me insane! :( I had the previous MacBook Pro (2017), which had its widely known keyboard problems, but I heard that in the new model the keyboard was improved. It indeed felt better at the beginning, but now with this problem I still am deeply dissatisfied.

I must mention that the before-touchbar models were perfect in terms of the keyboard, I had MacBook Pro 2014 with no keyboard issues for three years, and already two new models are terribly worse designed.

I must also mention that from the programmer point of view the touchbar is absolutely awful. You have it displaying F1-F12 keys, because they're used extensively in the IDE, you don't look at the keyboard when you type, but you touch them _accidentally_ without even looking there - and you start debugging, jump to symbols and do all sorts of unrequested stuff. This never happens with normal F-keys. But I'm forced to buy touchbar model, because I require the top performance for development.

The fact that Apple doesn't offer top performance without an awful downgrade in programmers usability that comes with the touchbar together with the keyboard problems in a $4K laptop drives me insane.

Same for my mac as well. 2018 13" MacBook Pro with TouchBar. My Issue is with the spacebar is getting double-typed as well as the return key. Hope Apple will support an extended warranty for this issue.

I saw in another related thread someone saying to put your lips on the offending key and try sucking really hard. It has seemed to help a bit but the issue returns later on.

Feb 14, 2019 12:16 PM in response to AnthoU

I've had the same issue on my MacBook Pro 13" 2018. For me, it was the spacebar which kept repeating. It was very easy to spot because there is a keyboard setting on the Mac that makes a double space appear as a fullstop then a space. It was intermittent, which was a real pain - it would appear repeat

Fortunately, this came up while it was under warranty. I took it to the Apple Store who promptly replaced the 'top case' of the laptop - apparently this is the keyboard, Touch Bar, speakers etc., everything that is attached to the top half of the casing. I picked it up today and it all seems fine so far (not that I would necessarily have been able to tell immediately, as the issue is intermittent). I'll see how it goes over the next few weeks.

One comment they did make at the Apple Store was that people tend to get the issue with the keys that are regularly used in typing and which are used in lots of words. I guess the implication is that heavily used keys may develop the issue over time. This would ring true with the spacebar being the issue that I experienced but I really don't type much at all, so don't think that was the issue, at least not in my case.

It sounds more like a faulty design to me. It's happened to me within weeks and I'm not yet ready to part with it for weeks.

To me it is clear Apple hopes to be able to iron out issues with the butterfly keyboard but it's stil very much work in progress. I'm just hopeful that if and when they finally solve it they'll reach out to all of us and get our keyboards fixed.

Feb 15, 2019 6:12 AM in response to AnthoU

You're definitely not alone. I've been experiencing the same problem, though my keyboard also has an issue with the space key (which results in rogue periods '.' throughout my writing. It's disheartening to hear that the problem has persisted for many of you, despite getting replacement devices. I've got an appointment on Sunday to take mine in, and hope they're able to fix it, though it doesn't seem likely based on what I've read here.

It's absolutely shocking to me that Apple hasn't addressed an issue like this given how many people (> 55,000 on this thread alone) have cited the issue. I've had MacBooks (Pro, Air, Air) since 2006 and never experienced this issue with any of those machines even in situations where the computer was exposed to significantly more amounts of dust than this one has been.
