Is IOS12 compatible with OS X Yosemite?

Is IOS12 compatible with an old MacBook Pro only running OS X Yosemite and iTunes12.8.0.150? Unfortunately, Apple has not come out with a new MacBook Air to which to upgrade beyond Yosemite.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), Iphone 7Plus

After much work and effort and pain on a lot of people's part, I think I can summarize the answer:

  • Yosemite does not seem to be compatible with IOS12
  • However, in my case I was able to upgrade to El Capitan (10.11.6), despite the fact that:
  • My computer is old (late 2008)
  • there was no update path via the Apple icon and About

  • Apple Tech Support provided me with a link to upgrade to El Capitan and it works!
  • IOS12 and El Capitan are compatible.
  • However when I upgraded to IOS12, I initially could not back up the iPhone on iTunes, despite the fact I had just backed up the iPhone to iTunes a half hour before with the previous IOS.
  • there was no visible iPhone icon next to Music on Itunes
  • iTunes could not see the iphone
  • I called Apple Technical support and the rep ran me through restarting the computer in Safe Mode (shift key when restart)
  • After a very long time, the iPhone icon came up on Itunes
  • I rebooted normally and restarted iTunes and the iPhone icon was there.
  • I then successfully backed up the iPhone.

Thanks for everyone's effort. Now I don't have to immediately have to buy a new Mac (being announced at the end of October?).

Have you downloaded iTunes 12.9?

There is, as yet, no standalone Mac installer for iTunes 12.9. Given it has been released with Mojave while the iTunes download page still pointedly links to 12.8 it might not happen. What I've read suggests that El Capitan or better is required for iOS 12 compatibility via iTunes 12.8, and an additional software download that may or may not get delivered automatically. Reinstalling iTunes while your device is connected and unlocked seems to help most of the time.

tt2 - thanks very much, this worked!! In summary therefore I have done the following (after installing iOS12):

1. Updated from Yosemite to High Sierra (to do so I was forwarded a link by an Apple support team member, I couldn't find it just by going to Apple);

2. Removed all USB cables and tried a new lightning cable (don't know now whether this was required);

3. Re-installed iTunes from tt2's link;

4. Re-connected my iPhone (a further download occurred) and then the sync started just as it used to.

However, Photos did not open and/or update - might I need to re-install Photos as well?

A Post Script;

I next tried to sync an iPad for my wife on her computer on the same Mac but with a different ID. Same problem. No iPad icon showed up next to the Music pull down. I called Apple. They had me redownload and reinstall iTunes. That process triggered some additional software that had to be loaded to see the iPad icon. It all worked. (Note the link: If your iOS 12 device isn't recognized by iTunes, you might need to upgrade macOS or iTunes. However, then I still had trouble syncing up. It didn't recognize where the files were to be synced on the Mac. A reboot to safe mode seemed to do the trick (hopefully). Hope all this helps.

Apologies, I did mean the dialog box. However, I updated to ios12 on my iPhone 6 independently, it wasn't until after the update that I then plugged it into my macbook (Yosemite 10.10.5) and iTunes 12.8.0.150 that the dialog appeared, 'To use your iPhone with iTunes, you need to install OS X 10.11.4 (or later).' Frustrating that I had already performed the update to ios12, with no pre-warning, and with no option to downgrade back to iOS 11. Restoring the iPhone does not restore the previous iOS either. There is no way of connecting the iPhone to iTunes now, can't sync via wifi without first having a connection to the laptop/itunes. I have a redundant iPhone!
