Is IOS12 compatible with OS X Yosemite?

Is IOS12 compatible with an old MacBook Pro only running OS X Yosemite and iTunes12.8.0.150? Unfortunately, Apple has not come out with a new MacBook Air to which to upgrade beyond Yosemite.

After much work and effort and pain on a lot of people's part, I think I can summarize the answer:

  • Yosemite does not seem to be compatible with IOS12
  • However, in my case I was able to upgrade to El Capitan (10.11.6), despite the fact that:
  • My computer is old (late 2008)
  • there was no update path via the Apple icon and About

  • Apple Tech Support provided me with a link to upgrade to El Capitan and it works!
  • IOS12 and El Capitan are compatible.
  • However when I upgraded to IOS12, I initially could not back up the iPhone on iTunes, despite the fact I had just backed up the iPhone to iTunes a half hour before with the previous IOS.
  • there was no visible iPhone icon next to Music on Itunes
  • iTunes could not see the iphone
  • I called Apple Technical support and the rep ran me through restarting the computer in Safe Mode (shift key when restart)
  • After a very long time, the iPhone icon came up on Itunes
  • I rebooted normally and restarted iTunes and the iPhone icon was there.
  • I then successfully backed up the iPhone.

Thanks for everyone's effort. Now I don't have to immediately have to buy a new Mac (being announced at the end of October?).

See Nigel Cartwright's discussion above. He was unsuccessful. Apple is supposed to be world famous at integration, but it seems they cannot tell if all these devices will work together. Apple's IOS 12 just talks about IOS devices, but not integrating with MacOS devices (10.10.5) or iTunes (12.8.0.150 or 12.9). It would be nice if they had a program to check all these compatibilities.

iTunes 12.9 is the Windows version and the Mac version is 12.8. That still does not explain why the

iPhone XS or XR have Mac OS X 10.11.6 as their minimum requirements, or the experience of some on this thread with iPad Pros not being able to sync iTunes 12.8 with their 10.10.5 Mac. There is still some unknown factor in control here. Hopefully we can pin it down soon.

Since this thread has started and nobody has been able to confirm any compatibility with Mac OS X 10.10.5, I have found a publication that discusses downgrading to iOS 11.4:

Don't upgrade your iOS until you can upgrade to Mac OS X 10.11.6, or use a version of Windows compatible with iTunes 12.9 on your Mac.

The broad swathe of evidence suggests that iOS 12 requires iTunes 12.8 or better running on OS X 10.11.4 El Capitan or better, however there is no definitive statement I've been able to find from Apple. Your mileage may vary, but if you lock yourself out there is no going back. Use Feedback - iTunes - Apple to share your thoughts with Apple. It does seem somewhat counter-intuitive that if every device that could run iOS 11 qualifies for iOS 12 they haven't also made it possible for every computer that could manage iOS 11 devices to be able to manage them if upgraded. 😕😮😟

Yes that is why I asked the original question. But depending on the age of your MAC, you may be able to upgrade to El Capitan 10.11.4. It doesn't show up on the App Store dialog, saying no updates are available (Apple really needs to fix the update process. They seem to be worse than Windows). What you have to do is call up Apple MAC support and get a link that will allow you to download the El Capitan software. My Macbook Pro was late 2008 and it did work despite my skepticism, though I have still been reluctant to try the iPhone upgrade. But you already upgraded to IOS 12. You say you MacBook Pro is 2013 vintage, later than mine. Should work. Call up Apple. What do you have to lose?

This may be useful to some, thank you, but the critical issue is that no heads up was provided by Apple that moving to iOS12 and iTunes 12 prevents Yosemite users from accessing iTunes. Many have computer assets that can take an OSX upgrade but software that can't or they don't want to [more especially where updated software requires subscription and current (often expensive) software works adequately].

Whilst one can understand Apple not knowing the state of third party software vendor's products, they should make it clear what adverse impacts any iOS updates may have on other Apple software.

I am not even sure it is well known that within a few days of releasing a major iOS update e.g. from 11 to 12, Apple stop 'signing' the previous version so roll backs are not possible.

Now that you're running High Sierra have you tried these steps yet?

Download the current 12.8 installer for iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Unlock your iOS device and connect it to USB.

Reinstall iTunes from the .dmg that you've downloaded.

During the installation it should announce that a further software update is required.

Install that and iTunes should see your device.

The safe start method was what finally worked for me in El Capitain as well. When I connected the phone with iTunes open I got a dialog on the mac informing me an additional software download was required to communicate with my phone. It did the download, shut down iTunes and completed the install. Thereafter my iPhone XS showed up in iTunes reliably safe mode or not.
