You could wait for Apple to release a new build, but reading around it seems that if you have your iPhone connected and unlocked and reinstall iTunes 12.8 then your Mac may offer to install an additional update to work with the iOS 12 device.

Have you tried the following yet?

Download the current 12.8 installer for iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Unlock your iOS device and connect it to USB.

Install iTunes from the .dmg that you've downloaded.

Near the end of the installation it should announce that a further software update is required.

Install that and iTunes should see your devices.

Or wait for iTunes 12.9 for Mac which should likely come out tomorrow.

Finally it’s working. My issue was when connecting my iPhone, iTunes would open andMa dialogue ox popped up saying new software was needed. It never said what it wanted to install, and twice, Apple told me it wanted to install Mojave which I could not do due to software incompatibility.

i called Apple a 3rd time and thankfully got a senior advisor who told me it wanted to install a small piece of software only for the iPhone. I shared my screen w/ her and we tried the install and it worked! Now, iTunes 12.8 recognizes my iOS 12.1 iPhone.

Thanks. I think it is clear that Mac owners are supposed to get that additional download to work with iOS 12 but it doesn't seem to happen reliably. Reinstalling iTunes seems to kick things into gear. As you say, I'm sure Apple have 'reasons' but releasing 12.9 on both platforms at the same time would have made more sense and possibly have avoided this particular issue cropping up.

Thank you for this. You prevented me from going insane. The reinstall of iTunes (12.8) to my High Sierra, and launching it with the affected iPhone in iOS12 connected unlocked solved the problem. Saved me from installing Mojave as recommended by the Apple support specialist I talked to. The link to the downloadable installer too was big, as Apple seems to have taken down any links to an official iTunes installer (the earlier links lead to the bundled one in Mojave now).
